Overview

Position Title: Part Time, Temporary Instructor - American Sign Language

Reports To: Instructional Support Manager

Department/Team: Learning Services/Instruction

Location: Remote with in-person initial training and 2-day annual conference

Pay: Piece-Rate;
Approximately $125/enrollment

Technology Requirements: Personal computer owned or controlled by the individual (excluding tablets or Chromebooks). Smartphone or tablet for two-factor identification. Unrestricted high-speed Internet access.

Position Summary: Facilitates an instructional program that is developed and aligned to state standards. Feedback is provided by the instructor in an online environment to guide and encourage students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. This is a part-time position with limits on student load per term and a requirement to work daily (Monday–Friday) with dedicated office hours and timely communication with students and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will support instruction in specific content areas (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Electives, or World Language) using MV course materials. This is a term-by-term appointment with a maximum of 19 hours per week.

Note: The position is based on enrollment and term definitions and the number of students may vary.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Facilitate instructional activities and provide supplemental materials to promote meaningful learning experiences for Michigan Virtual students in certified content areas.
  • Provide all needed contact information within the course instructor profile, including MV email and a phone number.
  • Maintain regular communication with MV staff, students, parents, and school personnel during daytime hours within 24 hours.
  • Offer at least one office hour per week between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., posted in the course instructor profile.
  • Provide detailed feedback, grading, and assessment of student work within 72 hours (96 hours for courses in English Language Arts, Advanced Placement, and select social studies courses).
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ progress and development, including assessment and participation in online discussions, and contact students regularly regarding progress.
  • Contribute to developing a positive virtual class culture, including weekly course announcements.
  • Update records as required by law and school regulations, including tracking documents related to Special Education requirements.
  • Prepare monthly progress updates, attendance, and academic reports; submit final term scores within one week of term end.
  • Attend in-person annual two-day professional development event:
    Collaboration of the Minds (August) and two virtual department meetings per school year. Additional events are optional.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the performance goals established through annual planning.
Required Education, Certifications, & Licenses (minimum)
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possesses and maintains a valid Secondary Teaching Certificate in a specific content area with Highly Qualified designation.
Required Experience (minimum)
  • Minimum of one to three years of successful teaching at the middle or high school level.
Desired

Education and/or Experience
  • Master’s degree or higher preferred (Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Content Area).
  • Successful experience teaching online and/or in a blended learning environment preferred.
