We are currently seeking a Government Relations Advisor to join our team and help advance our public policy and advocacy priorities at the provincial and federal levels. This position is based out of our Langley Collaboration Centre. Consideration may also be given to candidates who will work at our Toronto Collaboration Centre or remotely in Ottawa, depending on experience and organizational needs.

The Government Relations Advisor supports First West’s government relations and public policy priorities by monitoring legislative and policy developments, coordinating advocacy activities, and supporting relationship management with government and sector stakeholders. The role contributes policy analysis, issue intelligence, and operational support to ensure government relations activities are aligned with First West’s strategic objectives, values, and governance requirements.

Here’s what would be included as a part of your typical day

  • Government relations support:Coordinates government relations activities, including engagement plans, calendars, and meeting logistics. Prepares briefing materials, presentations, speaking notes, backgrounders, and post-meeting summaries. Builds and maintains government relations contact lists and tracking tools for engagements, commitments, and outcomes. Plans and executes advocacy events and engagement opportunities (. roundtables, site tours, conferences, and consultations). Represents First West at external meetings and sector events.
  • Legislative & Policy Analysis
    :
    Monitors federal and provincial legislative and policy developments relevant to First West. Maintains a legislative pipeline view (. mandate letters, budgets, committee agendas, consultations, and regulatory bulletins). Produces concise intelligence summaries and impact notes. Supports the development of policy positions and consultation responses through research, drafting, and coordination of internal input and feedback. Identifies emerging policy trends, risks, and opportunities affecting the Canadian financial services industry and credit union sectors.
  • Issues management and intelligence
    :
    Identifies and triages issues that may affect First West’s operating environment, reputation, or strategic objectives. Maintains a government relations issues and risk register, including triggers, owners, mitigations, and status. Supports the preparation of rapid response materials during time-sensitive events. Coordinates with Communications, Legal, Risk, and other business areas to ensure consistent messaging and actions.
  • Relationship and reputation building
    :
    Supports the development of advocacy plans, outreach, and correspondence with elected officials, political staff, public servants, and sector partners. Maintains stakeholder maps, decision‑making pathways, and documentation of positions on key files. Tracks engagements and outcomes. Ensures interactions reflect First West values, brand and commitments to members, team members, and communities. Coordinates participation with sector organizations, including the Canadian Credit Union Association and Chambers of Commerce, and supports joint submissions and advocacy initiatives.
  • Strategic Alignment: Aligns government relations activities with enterprise priorities and strategic objectives. Coordinates internal alignment by gathering input and feedback from across the organization to support clear positions and outcomes. Assists the Corporate Initiatives team on strategic initiatives, including mergers, acquisitions, and regulatory reviews.
  • Advocacy Compliance
    :
    Supports compliance with applicable lobbying, advocacy requirements, and internal policies in partnership with the Legal team. Maintains accurate records of communications and activities required for reporting and registration. Ensures materials and engagements meet governance, privacy, and records management standards.
  • Measurement & Reporting: Reports quarterly metrics (., number and quality of GR touchpoints, consultation submissions, policy risk/opportunity tracking, stakeholder sentiment, and outcomes achieved). Maintains dashboards and contributes to executive and Board reporting.
