Position: 26-U004 - Building Inspector

Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Building Inspector to join our team of professionals in the Permits, Licences and Inspections Division, Permits and Inspections Department. Reporting to the Manager, Permits and Inspections, in this unionized position you will perform regulatory work including inspections of property and on-going construction to ensure conformance to bylaws, codes and standards.

Responsibilities

Inspect single-family and two-family dwellings, minor structures and buildings regulated under Part 9 of the Building Code to ensure compliance with applicable codes, acts, bylaws, standards and regulations

Examine and check plans and permit applications for compliance with building and zoning bylaws and issue permits for all types of construction and structures in compliance with Township bylaws, codes and regulations

Inspect fire damaged structures to assess extent of damage

Inspect buildings for change of occupancy, rezoning and business license applications

Enforce bylaws related to fences, accessory buildings, signs, land-use contracts and related use of land

Liaise with internal/external inspectional services such as C.M.H.C and the Homeowners Protection Office

Prepare records and reports and investigate unauthorized or unsafe building practices or operations

Perform related work as required

Qualifications

Graduation from a technical institute in Building Technology or a related subject, or completion of a recognized trades apprenticeship plus completion of code related courses and considerable related experience in municipal plan checking and/or the building construction industry or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Thorough knowledge of practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in building construction

Thorough knowledge of the BC Building Code, Plumbing Code, Municipal Bylaws and construction practices, policies, procedures, standards and regulations

Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and related material, recognize technical requirements and suggest changes and corrections as required

Ability to communicate effectively with internal/external contacts and use sound judgement in tactfully enforcing regulations, bylaws and ordinances

Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for technical decisions

Required Certifications/Licenses
Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application.
