We are seeking Night Nurses to join our team, working 7 nights on, 7 nights off.

The roles involve working alongside a dedicated team of nurses, ACAs and veterinary surgeons, to provide nursing care to our patients in our ICU, Surgery/Neurology and Canine/Feline Medicine Wards.

As this is an OOH role, the ideal candidate must be able to work well under their own initiative as well as in a team. Excellent time keeping skills and the ability to work well under pressure are also a must as the caseload is extremely variable. No two nights are the same!

  • Rota details: 7 nights on / 7 nights off
  • 12 hour shifts
    -7pm-7am or 8pm-8am

The main purpose of the post is to provide out of hours nursing support within the small animal hospital. You will be responsible for the nursing care and treatment of hospitalised patients as well as assisting with emergency procedures as required. You will also be responsible for providing nursing assistance for the Out of Hours service.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Assisting veterinary surgeons, students and other staff with in-patient care throughout the referral hospital to include restraint and support for clinical procedures and emergency cases.
  • Independently carry out nursing duties within the intensive care unit and medical and surgical wards to a high standard such as monitoring critical care patients.
  • Ensure and effective and smooth handover of inpatient during morning and evening rounds
  • Ensure adequate nursing plans and inpatient records are set up and reassessed as required in relation to the patient’s requirements
  • Ability to demonstrate and perform laboratory skills within the unit
  • Teaching of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing undergraduates, to include clinical coach training if appropriate.
  • Ensuring cleanliness and hygiene are maintained within the unit
  • Dispensing and administering (under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon) medication to animals, maintaining accurate stock control and following all protocols relating to drug holding, dispensing and handling and giving clear and accurate instructions to clients when dispensing medication
  • Maintaining accurate patient records with regards to all clinical notes, treatment, diagnoses, client communication and client /patient information
  • Ensuring that all procedures and consumables are accurately entered onto the patients’ records in order to keep the invoice up to date at all times during their stay
  • Participating in a nurse rota which provides sickness and holiday cover as required
  • Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our, clients, employees, and students.

  • Communicating in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleagues
  • Carry out all other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager.
