Position Summary
The Operator – Heavy Equipment is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment at a recycling center, landfill or transfer station for the purpose of transferring, spreading, covering, loading and/or compacting waste or soil in an efficient and safe manner. The operator ensures all equipment is inspected, operated, and maintained in compliance with company policy and safety standards.
Principal Responsibilities- Perform pre‑ and post‑operation inspection of equipment to ensure maintenance and safety.
- Safely and efficiently operate equipment such as forklift, excavator, bulldozer, rock truck, front‑end loader, and other machinery using proper safety standards.
- Continuously monitor waste for evidence of unacceptable materials.
- Monitor equipment condition to ensure it is operationally ready at all times; clean tracks or wheels as needed.
- Perform and document minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to the Maintenance Shop.
- Complete Equipment Condition Report and other reports as necessary; report required repairs to the supervisor.
- Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Good customer service skills to meet and exceed customer expectations; professional, courteous, and cooperative toward customers and co‑workers.
- Strong time management skills to ensure responsibilities are completed efficiently and safely.
- Effective follow‑through ability; adheres to work schedules and addresses challenges as they arise.
- Adherence to company policies and rules, promotion of safety standards, and avoidance of inappropriate risks.
- Maintains pride in work and strives to achieve all goals.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Two years of verifiable prior related experience in heavy equipment operation not required but preferred.
- Experience working at sites regulated by OSHA or a state environmental agency is preferred.
