Fire Captain – McDonald Green Fire Station

Position Summary: This 24‑hour shift position supervises and performs firefighting and fire prevention activities on the assigned shift. The Fire Captain responds to emergency situations, provides assistance to superiors in controlling fire scenes, manages subordinates through the chain of command, and reports to the Fire Rescue Operations Battalion Chief, Deputy Director, and Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director.

• Respond to fire alarms and other emergencies, taking full command of the scene until relieved by a higher ranking officer.
• Perform supervisory and technical firefighting and fire prevention work on the assigned shift.
• Assist the Operations Battalion Chief or Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director/Deputy Director in the total operations of the Fire Department and other county functions.
• Supervise subordinate personnel through the chain of command; instruct, assign, review, and plan work; maintain standards; coordinate activities; allocate personnel.
• Review work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; offer advice and assistance as needed.
• Ensure all equipment and apparatus are kept in proper and safe condition; implement corrective action for equipment in need of repair or maintenance; maintain testing records.
• Ensure subordinate personnel are trained in required courses and maintain continuing education credits; ensure all new hires are trained as Medical First Responders with necessary annual updates.
• Operate and maintain an assortment of equipment and hand tools used in fire service, such as vehicles, fire trucks, aerial towers, pumps, suppression equipment, breathing apparatus, protective clothing, radio equipment, generators, extinguishers, and ladders.
• Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals, including volunteers, other county employees, and the public; enforce all safety rules and regulations.
• Immediately report unsafe work practices or conditions and any on‑job injuries or illnesses when safe to do so.

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Certified fire service certification transcript.
• ICS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800 certifications.
• NFPA Firefighter Level II and Hazardous Materials Operations or equivalent;
  Hazardous Materials Technician within the first year.
• Three years certified interior firefighter and two years at the rank of engineer or equivalent education and experience.
• Lancaster County First Responder, EMT or equivalent within the first twelve months.
• Legally and physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a fire engine, vehicles, fire‑fighting equipment, computer, and basic office equipment.
• Maintain physical fitness: lift and carry up to 200 pounds; exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount frequently; pass the annual Department physical examination; obtain USDOT physical clearance for CDL drivers as required.
