Position Summary The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in supporting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to live independent, fulfilling, and meaningful lives.
DSPs provide hands-on support in both home and community-based settings, assisting with daily living activities, skill development, and meaningful social inclusion. This role requires empathy, patience, reliability, and a strong commitment to person-centered care. DSPs work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to deliver consistent, respectful, and high-quality support tailored to each individual's unique goals and needs.
Key Responsibilities
A. Assisting with Daily Living and Personal Care Support individuals with bathing, grooming, dressing, and personal hygiene Assist with meal preparation, feeding, and maintaining balanced nutrition Provide medication reminders or assistance per established care plans Support toileting and hygiene needs while ensuring privacy and dignity
B. Promoting Independence and Skill Building Encourage development of life skills such as cooking, shopping, money management, and home maintenance Support independence in daily routines through guided practice and positive reinforcement Facilitate social interaction, communication, and self-expression Promote community inclusion through recreational, educational, and cultural activities
C. Behavioral Support Implement strategies outlined in individual behavior support plans Observe and document behavioral patterns and progress Provide emotional support and encouragement during challenging situations
D. Health and Safety Monitoring Monitor and report changes in physical health, emotional state, or behavior Assist with mobility needs including transfers, ambulation, and wheelchair support Maintain a safe, organized, and hygienic environment Support structured routines that promote consistency and predictability
E. Documentation and Reporting Accurately document daily activities, progress, and incidents in service notes Submit daily service notes with GPS verification at the end of each shift Communicate regularly with families, supervisors, and care team members
F. Community Engagement and Social Integration Support participation in community events, social activities, and employment opportunities Encourage peer relationships and positive social interactions Assist individuals in navigating social environments with confidence G. Health Monitoring Observe and respond to ongoing health conditions such as seizures or diabetes Assist with medical appointments, follow-up care, and treatment adherence Promote healthy living practices including exercise and preventive wellness H.
Team Collaboration and Support Collaborate with nurses, behavior specialists, and supervisors Participate in team meetings and contribute insights on individual progress Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience:
Prior experience in caregiving, home health, or IDD support preferred Clearances
Required:
