Security Officer – Safety and Security – Full Time/Evenings

Antelope Valley Medical Center

Provides safety and security services, protecting customers, employees, and property by enforcing the laws of the State of California and the policies of Antelope Valley Hospital under the direction of lead officers, supervisors, and the Director of Safety and Security.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Actively participate in and implement the security management program.
• Monitor the hospital CCTV system, alarm systems, and communication equipment, dispatching staff as needed.
• Implement hospital access control procedures at all hospital entrances.
• Respond to emergency calls, making initial assessments of situations using tact, diplomacy, and judgment.
• Resolve violent and potentially violent situations.
• Intervene with individuals attempting to impose physical harm upon themselves or who are posing a threat to others or hospital property.
• Provide security and protection to hospital patients, visitors, employees and customers by patrolling areas.
• Complete necessary departmental forms, reports, and logs in a timely and detailed manner.
• Enforce the laws of the State of California and the policies and procedures of the hospital.
• Greet all customers, offering assistance as needed.
• Maintain and wear a complete and neat uniform per department dress code.
• Observe and report faulty and/or unsafe equipment, including fire and safety related items.
• Carry out safety and infection control procedures to ensure customer and employee safety.
• Support and participate in the hospital's performance improvement process.

Non‑Essential Duties

• Fuel security vehicles, check fluid levels as needed, and conduct a preliminary safety inspection of the vehicle before each use.
• Keep locker room, Sec Ops and personal locker clean.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Basic knowledge of safety & security.
• Basic knowledge of security monitoring.
• Basic reporting skills.

Skills

• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Strong writing skills required for compiling detailed reports.

Abilities

• Ability to speak and communicate with customers clearly and effectively.
• Ability to use basic computer applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Ability to meet the core competencies developed for all employees of the hospital.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• 6 months security‑related experience (preferred).

Required Licensure and/or Certifications

• Valid California driver’s license.
• Current California Guard Card.
• Valid First Aid and/or CPR card maintained at all times.
• Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) designation from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 90 days of hire.
• Certified Advanced Healthcare Security Officer (CAHSO) designation from IAHSS within 180 days of hire.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention 8‑hour course from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) within 90 days of hire and recertification annually.
• Health Stream coursework, within 60 days of hire, on:
  Workplace Violence, National Incident Management System (NIMS), Emergency Management.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Work performed inside a hospital building and outdoors under potentially stressful and emotional conditions.
• Stand, walk, sit or a combination thereof for 8 hours.
• Able to lift 50 lbs.
• Able to move vigorously as needed.
• Able to grip with both hands.
• Able to bend and reach without limitations.
