Description
This is a full-time tenure-track, 10-month classroom teaching assignment in the Health & Safety Sciences Division. Paramedic Instructor reports to the Director of Emergency Medical Services Programs. The Paramedic Lead Instructor provides quality learning experiences, facilitates the learning process, advises students, pursues professional development opportunities, and contributes to the development of courses and programs. The current teaching load is 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester.
Faculty are responsible for 5 office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered onsite, online, and/or in hybrid format, as well as evening and/or Saturday classes.
Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction
- Teach all assigned courses for the full duration of scheduled instruction.
- Ensure that each class session contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency.
- Evaluate student progress and provide appropriate, timely feedback.
- Incorporate appropriate instructional technology to enhance student learning.
- Provide and/or facilitate quality experiences in laboratory and/or clinical settings to meet program needs.
- Maintain cleanliness of instructional areas and laboratories.
- Ensure the proper operation of classroom/lab equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the appropriate person(s).
- Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom and laboratory equipment to the Coordinator.
- Develop and distribute course syllabi according to established templates, providing appropriate information to students concerning course expectations and evaluation criteria.
Other Services to Students
- Maintain appropriate accessibility for students.
- Serve as educational advisor to assigned students by providing academic and employment planning.
- Assist in recruitment and retention efforts of the College.
- Advocate and provide motivation for students.
- Communicate student needs to Director or Coordinator.
Administrative Expectations
- Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all deadlines, and ensure data accuracy and completeness.
- Remain current in discipline and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the college and other opportunities, including attendance at off-campus activities and webinars, as feasible.
- Participate in program and curriculum review, offering suggestions concerning curriculum improvement in keeping with the mission and vision of the college.
- Serve on and contribute to school committees as needed and as appointed.
- Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other announced co-curricular activities.
- Maintain proper communication and supportive relationships with all units and branches of the school.
- Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and obligations, and meet the needs of the discipline, department, division, and school.
Minimum Qualifications
Most current Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in California Community Colleges:
Any Bachelor’s or higher AND two years of professional experience, OR Any associate degree and six years of professional experience OR the equivalent. Antelope Valley College Equivalency:
No Equivalency, and a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students. Additional required qualifications include:
- Three years EMS experience at the paramedic level of certification.
- Current CPR certification.
- Must have current valid, non-probationary California Paramedic License, MD, or RN license.
- NAEMSE Instructor I or similar 40-hour education course or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- National Registry of EMTs (NRP).
