Overview

This position is a full-time tenure track, 11-month DSPS counselor assignment in the Counseling and Matriculation Division. The current counseling work week is not less than 35 hours a week.

Responsibilities
  • Provide academic and career counseling to a diverse student population.
  • Create comprehensive student educational plans for degree completion and transfer.
  • Assist students in selecting appropriate courses, programs of study, and campus resources based on their abilities, limitations, and goals; review and approve Verification of Disability to provide approved Academic Accommodations to students with disabilities in compliance with Title 5, DSPS regulations and ADA Section 504 requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with disabilities in a counseling setting and/or community college.
  • Liaison with teaching faculty to assist students with disabilities when needed or requested.
  • Assist students with disabilities by connecting them to campus resources and outside resources as needed.
  • Collaborate with counseling faculty, instructional programs, administration, and student services to support student retention and success.
  • Consult with faculty regarding inclusive instructional practices, accommodation implementation, and disability-related concerns while maintaining student confidentiality.
  • Conduct outreach and orientation presentations for prospective and current students regarding DSPS services.
  • Provide an environment conducive to learning.
  • Maintain records in various software platforms used by the institution and DSPS office.
  • Perform counseling-related duties as assigned and support the DSPS program, including participation in faculty/division meetings and trainings; shared governance, including the DSPS Advisory Committee.
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision and development of the curriculum, and collaborate with fellow faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees, staff and the campus community.
  • Engage in continuous improvement practices to enhance DSPS counseling services.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse backgrounds of community college students.
  • Travel between District locations is expected.
  • Perform other counseling-related duties as assigned and provide academic advisement for students and create educational plans.
  • Assist students who wish to transfer, may be on academic probation or need to declare an academic major.
  • Assignment may include working during the day, evening or online.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in California Community Colleges: (Applicant must meet one of the following requirements)

  • Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling
  • OR Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
  • (A) Counseling for students with disabilities;
  • or
  • (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

Antelope Valley College Equivalency: (Equivalency approved 9/11/24 expires 9/11/27)

  • Current certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) as certified by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification; and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level…
