Supervisor, Rising Scholars (Categorically funded position)
Under the direction of the assigned administrator, serve as a liaison to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), Los Angeles County Probation Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, other government and community organizations, and general public on matters related to AVC's Rising Scholars Programs (including Focus 180 and Prison Education Programs); participate in campus and community events and activities, assist in planning, organizing, marketing, operations, and growth of AVC's Rising Scholars programs.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Develops, plans, organizes, and attends a variety of student and community-related programs, events, and activities, including, but not limited to, governmental and organizational fairs, festivals, campus activities, and meetings. (E)
- Assists in developing and implementing strategies to promote increased enrollment, retention, success, and involvement in the AVC Rising Scholars programs. Works with Marketing and the Public Information Office to advertise AVC's Rising Scholars programs. (E)
- Oversees and manages the matriculation process for the Prison Education Program (PEP), including admissions, enrollment, counseling, financial aid, and graduation.
- Reviews all admissions and California College Promise Grant (CCPG) applications before submitting to the Enrollment Services and Financial Aid offices to ensure accuracy and completeness. (E)
- Organizes graduation applications, transcripts, and specialized program registration, ensuring all Rising Scholars students meet their educational milestones and have the necessary documentation for their academic achievements. Ensures delivery of awarded certificates and degrees to PEP students. In coordination with CDCR staff, assists in the planning and facilitation of commencement events. (E)
- Serves as alias on to government, community groups, organizations, and other higher education institutions. (E)
- Maintains up-to-date records of student enrollment, attendance, academic progress, and provides reports when needed. (E)
- Serves as the primary point of contact for faculty involved in PEP; coordinates textbook requests, CDCR Canvas Shell requests, purchasing, and faculty stipends. Ensures all educational materials and resources are provided in a timely manner to support the instructional needs. (E)
- Develops and conducts orientation and training sessions for faculty teaching at the prison to ensure they are well-informed about the program's objectives, processes, and best practices. Creates informational materials for distribution to potential and current faculty teaching at the prison. (E)
- Creates informational, marketing, and recruitment materials for potential and current PEP and Focus 180 students. (E)
- Acts as an advocate for the AVC Rising Scholars programs and participants. Raises awareness about the benefits of educational programs and support for justice impacted students in correctional environments and AVC campuses. Participates in forums, workshops, and public speaking engagements to promote the program and its objectives. (E)
- Some travel required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Any combination equivalent to: a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Preferred bachelor’s degree in education, business administration, public administration or related field, OR at least two (2) years of work experience with students in a prison or justice impacted students at a college; experience giving oral presentations.
Categorically funded position through 6/30/2028; continued employment is contingent upon continued receipt of funding.
Licenses and Other RequirementsValid Driver’s License and current auto insurance as required by state law
Work a variable schedule to accommodate evening, weekend, and holiday hours
Acquire and maintain gate/site clearance to Los Angeles County Prison (LAC)
