Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our team in 5D Whiston Hospital. 5D has 25 in-patient beds and a specialist gym area for rehabilitation and group therapy. The main aim of ward 5D is to provide specialist rehabilitation for patients with a stroke, delivered by our multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, therapists and support from the National Stroke Association.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care to patients, providing advice in a variety of settings.
  • Carry out nursing procedures in line with current NMC standards of proficiency.
  • Ensure the health, wellbeing and independence of patients and service users across healthcare settings, maintaining associated records, and ensuring all patients receive safe and effective care at all times.
  • Supervise junior staff and all learners.
  • Understand and demonstrate the Trust values at all times.

Clinical & Communication Skills
  • Planning and organising a defined caseload of patients on a continuing basis.
  • Assessing, planning, implementing/delivering and evaluating patient care, recognising signs of deterioration and responding according to protocol.
  • Maintaining safe custody of drugs and ensuring procedures meet statutory and Trust requirements.
  • Effective communication with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team, using persuasion and reassurance.
  • Providing training to students and supervising junior staff.
Use of Resources
  • Efficient use of ward/departmental resources and equipment, including stock management and equipment maintenance.
  • Managing patient valuables, ensuring safe storage and transportation.
  • Signing off agency timesheets accurately.
  • Coordinating with the Roster Coordinator to maintain balanced rosters.
  • Ordering and receiving goods within the Trust’s financial framework.
Team Development
  • Deputising in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Managing own time and delegating to ensure high quality service delivery.
  • Acting as assessor/supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Supporting the department’s appraisal process for junior staff by providing feedback.
  • Participating in redeployment requirements and ensuring safe staffing across the Trust.
Research, Audit & Personal Development
  • Contributing to data collection for research and audit purposes and identifying audit topics relevant to the ward/department.
  • Critically evaluating research before applying to clinic practice to enhance patient care.
  • Identifying areas for self‑development and supporting the team’s culture of learning and innovation.
  • Maintaining a professional portfolio and reflective diary for development and revalidation.
