Health Care Assistant – Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Assistant to join our Hyper Acute Stroke Unit in ward 5C at Whiston Hospital.

Ward 5C is a 32‑bed ward located on the 5th floor of the main Whiston Hospital site. Half of the ward (16 beds) is dedicated to the Hyper‑Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), where patients receive intensive care during the first 72 hours after a stroke. The remaining 16 beds form the HASU Step‑Down area.

The Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) will:

  • Undertake personal care duties for patients under the supervision of a registered health care practitioner. Personal care includes personal hygiene and assistance with feeding.
  • Record patient personal‑care information in accordance with local and trust policies.
  • Work with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team to deliver the trust’s vision and values, providing safe, high‑quality, compassionate, person‑centred care.
  • Demonstrate ward routine to new employees in own work area, where required.
  • Assist with personal‑care tasks such as mouth care, toileting and safe patient handling, including safe manoeuvring of equipment (hoists, wheelchairs).
  • Support feeding, diet and nutritional needs, recording intake and output accurately.
  • Ensure patient property is managed as per trust policy, and monitor supplies and order as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy working environment and support the implementation of duty of care principles.
  • Participate in team handovers, maintain personal development records, and undertake delegated procedures under supervision where appropriate.
