Overview

The main duties of the job are explained fully in the job description. These involve: transfer trolleys, establishing a safe working environment for patient and staff, transferring patients to and from clinical areas, receiving patients in the reception area, preparation of the clinical area prior to a procedure, safe moving and handling and positioning of patients, acting as circulating person to support the team during surgical procedures, maintaining stock levels, and maintaining department documentation in line with Trust Policy.

Refer any untoward incidents via the IR1 reporting system. Ensure patient property is returned to the appropriate ward area, report concerns regarding patient safety, complaints or safeguarding issues to a senior member of staff. Carry out basic observational monitoring and document accurately in the patient care pathway, assisting the clinical team to provide a high standard of patient care in line with the 12 Fundamental Standards of care and the 6 C’s, Trust Policy, through the provision of basic nursing care.

Rotate through all clinical services and support flexible cross-team working in line with trust policies. Treat patients and colleagues with respect, dignity and courtesy in accordance with our trust values of safe, personal and effective. Ability to demonstrate the Trust Values, Behaviours and Attitudes at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Checked, cleaned and prepared all transfer trolleys.
  • Established a safe working environment for patient and staff and ensured that patient privacy and dignity are not compromised.
  • Transferred patients to and from all clinical areas; reported problems or issues to relevant staff.
  • Received patients in the reception area; checked patient details prior to procedures.
  • Prepared the clinical area prior to a procedure.
  • Ensured safe moving, handling and positioning of patients.
  • Acted as circulating person according to competencies to support the team during surgical procedures.
  • Maintained adequate stock levels (e.g., linen and clinical equipment) and reported discrepancies to the staff in charge.
  • Maintained appropriate department documentation (e.g., theatre name, care plans and electronic records) in line with Trust Policy.
  • Referred untoward incidents to the senior person on duty via IR1 reporting system.
  • Ensured all patient property is returned/transferred to the appropriate ward area.
  • Reported concerns regarding patient safety, complaints or safeguarding issues immediately to a senior member of staff.
  • Qualifications and Experience
    • Proven experience of working within the operating department; experience of theatre practice; ability to prioritise workload.
    • Proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures.
    • Clear and accurate record keeping (essential criteria).
    • Clear and accurate written/verbal communication (essential criteria).
    • Able to work across departments and adapt to changing needs; able to work across both sites (Burnley General Hospital and Blackburn Hospital) as required.
    • Proven ability to work effectively within a team; demonstrate sympathetic/sensitive approach to patients and colleagues; advocate a positive attitude and use own initiative with problem solving.
    • Experience in team building (desirable criteria).
    • Proven evidence of up-to-date training; actively seeks to develop own knowledge, skills and ability (essential criteria).
    • Willingness to undertake future study for professional development; GCSE in English and Maths level 4-8 or equivalent;
      Diploma level 3 in healthcare/peri-operative support or 2 A levels (desirable criteria).
    • NVQ level 2/3 in operating dept support work or equivalent in care (desirable criteria).

    the salary advertised is for full-time hours. If the post is less than 37.5 hours per week, the salary will be pro-rata.
