This is an AFSCME represented full-time regular position with an end date of 12/31/2026. The City of Lakewood now participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

Under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent or designee, perform a full range of maintenance tasks up to and including journey level work to implement City work programs. Depending on the assigned work area, perform a variety of duties for a full range of maintenance for facilities, parks, streets, or street landscape divisions. Provide logistical support and assistance for City programs and special events.

Select and operate trucks, construction and maintenance equipment (motorized and non-motorized) in performing maintenance and improvement tasks for facilities, parks, streets, right-of-ways, public easements, and drainage systems.

Streets
:
Operate various types of equipment for road maintenance and construction; load, haul, and spread road maintenance material from dump trucks and trailers; operate mowing equipment for mowing roadside vegetation; and operate dump trucks with snow plow and/or sanding units attached for plowing or salting roads for snow and ice control. Perform routine road maintenance such as filling potholes, crack sealing, striping, installing pavement markings;

brushing and blading; clean culverts; grade and reshape shoulders; clear debris from the roadway surface and right-of-way; spread gravel, deicer, and salt; and clear and remove snow; perform spot repairs to roadways and shoulders; place traffic cones and other traffic control devices; assist in the construction of minor public works improvements. Install, repair, and replace signs and posts.

Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition; operate various types of vehicles to transport materials and personnel; prepare and maintain records, such as daily reports identifying specific work duty activities and time allotments; respond to inquiries from the public providing information within scope of knowledge and position; respond to emergency situations as necessary; remove trash, debris, and dead animals from roadways;

assist in training team members in safety and maintenance procedures and practices; perform flagger duties.

Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Actively champion a culture of and commitment to workplace safety through everyday actions and leadership.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Any combination equivalent to two (2) years of experience in streets maintenance, streets repair, and streets construction AND/OR relevant education, training, or certificate.

License and Certification Requirements

  • Successful passing of background and reference checks, and driving record/abstract review.
  • Satisfactory physical condition as evidenced by a City-approved medical examination. An offer of employment is conditioned upon passing a medical examination and drug screening.
  • Traffic flagger certification required within 90 days of hire date and maintained throughout employment.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Be on standby status for after-hour and holiday emergencies on a rotating schedule.
  • A valid Washington CDL Class B driver’s license and maintained throughout employment.
  • A CDL Class A driver’s license required within 12 months of employment and maintained throughout employment.
  • A CDL tanker endorsement (N) required within six (6) months of employment and maintained throughout employment.
  • A CDL air brake restrictions removed endorsement (L) required within six (6) months of employment and maintained throughout employment.

Applicants selected for interview must provide a current three-year commercial driving record abstract. Driving record abstracts are available at a minimal cost from the Washington State Department of Licensing.

  • Operate all machinery, tools, and equipment in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Maneuver vehicles through traffic and into tight spaces to accomplish loading and unloading.
