Position: Transit Maintenance Worker 3701 96th St. SW, Lakewood

Pierce Transit is an independent municipal organization, dedicated to fulfilling the mission of improving people's quality of life by providing safe, reliable, innovative, and useful transportation services that are locally based and regionally connected.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position performs a variety of routine, unskilled manual tasks in and around the Agency’s Maintenance facility and other Agency properties. Incumbents work with minimal supervision in completing routine and repetitive tasks that support daily maintenance and operations, including general cleaning, basic equipment operation, and assistance with vehicles, facilities, and Agency assets, helping to ensure a safe, clean, and efficient work environment.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

Responsibilities
  • Performs general cleaning of work areas.
  • Enters work order data on Agency personal computers.
  • Operates steam cleaner/pressure washer to clean structures, pavement, engines, transmissions, wheels and other vehicle parts.
  • Operates floor scrubbers.
  • Assists in the coordination and movement of Agency vehicles and assets scheduled for auction.
  • Performs sand blasting and cleans parts and components.
  • Installs advertising signs, first-aid kits, license plates, fire extinguishers, and other small equipment inside buses.
  • Cleans sludge from catch basins and trash from bus vacuums; cleans and refills washing tanks.
  • Recycles cleaning solvent and replaces solvent in cleaning tanks.
  • Maintain industrial parts washers and parts cleaners which includes cleaning, maintaining PH levels, draining and recharging with fresh cleaning solution.
  • Checks building fire extinguishers.
  • Assists Upholsterers in pulling staples, stripping seats, and removing and installing seats from buses.
  • Removes snow and spreads sand in parking lots on base and within the Pierce Transit service area.
  • Installs snow chains on Agency vehicles.
  • Makes vehicle changes when in-service vehicles break down.
  • May assist Equipment Body Repairers by removing paint from vehicles and components.
  • May assist Maintenance Mechanics with basic electrical, carpentry, plumbing, roofing, and concrete work or with moving furniture.
  • Report unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • May be required to paint some surfaces.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Qualifications

Required:

High school graduation or GED equivalent AND one year of experience in performing the duties of laborer or custodian or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.

Special Requirements

Must be able to pass Pierce Transit specific forklift training and safely operate forklifts.

Licensing, Certifications, & Other Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter.
  • Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) with air brake and Intrastate passenger endorsement prior to hire.
  • Must successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • This job is considered safety sensitive, covered by the Agency’s drug and alcohol program and subject to testing according to federal regulations.
  • Clearance is required prior to accessing Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). Employees in this classification are subject to recurring background checks conducted by JBLM.
  • Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment background check, pre-employment medical exam, physical ability test, and a drug and alcohol screen.
