Position SummaryProvides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.
Essential Functions- Maintain safety of children at all times through appropriately supervising program participants and ensuring daily cleaning and maintenance of facility, while maintaining YMCA and state licensing staff to child ratios and providing aid when needed.
- Assist in implementing age-appropriate techniques relative to the behavior management of children.
- Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
- Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Must attend and manage students during all field trips.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Cultivate positive relationships and maintain effective communication with parents, children and other staff.
- Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required;
Associates Degree preferred. - Must complete all licensing training within 30 days of hire.
- 1-year experience working with children; in a day camp setting preferred.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc. preferred.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
- At least 18 years of age
- Required to be fingerprinted
- Medical clearance and Immunizations
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
- Must receive ODJFS licensing certification within 30 days of hire.
- Demonstrate commitment to the mission, cause of the YMCA, and uphold its values and ethics.
- Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
- Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect. All employees are required to follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process: completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, contacting children protective services, the Y, and notifying your immediate supervisor, branch executive, risk management and human resources department(s).
