Position: Variable Park Ranger

HIRING RATE: $21.50/hour

Working in a temporary part-time capacity under the general direction of the Park Rangers, provides enforcement of rules and ordinances, as well as natural resources protection and preservation, while ensuring public safety for Regional Parks system.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with emergencies and provides first aid and rescue within training and ability.
  • Performs basic maintenance duties as needed or as assigned, including litter cleanup, trash emptying, beach prep, restroom cleaning and sign installation.
  • Maintains and utilizes City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Issues city citation for violations.
  • Provides a recurring patrol presence on all Regional Park properties and trails. Patrols using trucks, ATVs, foot, mountain bikes and motorboats.
  • Provides information to the public on the natural resources through public relations contacts, education programs, signs and written information.
  • Sells park passes and firewood, collects revenue and prepares deposits.
  • Effectively responds to emergencies and coordinates response with West Metro, Lakewood Police and other responding agencies. Provides first aid and rescue within training and ability.
  • Performs basic maintenance duties and natural resources management duties as needed or as assigned, including litter cleanup, trash emptying, restroom cleaning, sign installation, wildlife management and trail maintenance.
  • May provide guidance to and/or direct the work of other VARIABLE staff including gate attendants and boat inspectors.
  • Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS
  • Installs and removes park signs as needed.
  • Upkeep of patrol equipment, vehicles and boats.
  • Assists with the Aquatic Nuisance Species boat inspection and decontamination program for enforcement needs and as an ANS inspector.
  • Assists with programs, or presents, educational programs or information to the public.
Organizational Relationships
  • Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Park Rangers.
  • Supervision Given: May provide guidance to and/or direct the work of other VARIABLE staff as directed by Park Rangers.
Essential Qualifications (Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

)
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree, or course work leading to a degree, in a natural resources related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a park ranger, or similar position, is highly preferred. Other Park or natural resources experience will be considered.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Valid driver’s license, with good driving record. Valid CPR, AED and First Aid certification, State Aquatic Nuisance Species Certification (will be provided if not already held), collapsible baton and pepper spray certification (will be provided). Certifications must be completed within 2 months of hire date.
  • First responder or higher certification, and red card are preferred.
  • Water rescue, boating, or lifeguard certification are preferred.

Background and reference checks will be conducted for all regular and some variable/seasonal positions.
