Position Overview

The veterinary assistant provides support to veterinarians and technicians by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising, and grooming patients; preparing and sanitizing surgery suites; restraining and handling patients; and performing clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide compassionate care to all patients
  • Greet patients and owners, show them to the examination room, and record the patient’s weight and other vital signs upon arrival
  • Assist with triage, physical exams, treatments, and medication administration under a licensed veterinary technician (LVT)
  • Calm and soothe anxious patients
  • Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration and patient restraint
  • Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
  • Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.)
  • Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, and maintain proper documentation and control of drugs
  • Feed patients as prescribed or requested, record appetites, and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
  • Communicate politely with clients and ensure they feel comfortable leaving their pet(s)
  • Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medication plans
  • Maintain daily hospital cleanliness—clean equipment, kennels, and facilities; use chemicals safely; complete laundry
  • Bath and care for overnight patients; ensure clean, groomed release
  • Adhere to hospital safety and wellness regulations
  • Follow oral and written directions accurately
  • Maintain accurate medical records
  • Show up regularly; full-time presence is essential for every shift
  • Promote hospital products and services; support the organization
  • Respond promptly and respectfully to directions from the DVM or LVT
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Manager, including specialty area tasks (e.g., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology neu, internal medicine)
Qualifications (Required)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one year of experience in a veterinary environment performing duties of this position
  • Current knowledge of hospital procedures, policies, and services; client and patient treatment protocols; hospital computer systems; and standard procedures and terminology used in a veterinary hospital
  • Knowledge of controlling hygiene, anesthesia, and zoonotic disease safety
  • Ability to restrain animals, fill prescriptions, and monitor sedation procedures
  • Ability to work with sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, and unpleasant odors
  • Flexible scheduling and ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Physical stamina for lifting or carrying moderately heavy patients (up to 50 lb) and constant motion; may involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling

  • Monday - OFF
  • Tuesday - 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Thursday - 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Friday - OFF
  • Saturday - OFF

Pay Range: $19.73 – $24.16 USD
