Maintenance Trainee - Public Works Department, Facilities Maintenance Division

Employment Type: Limited Term – 4,160 hours maximum
Schedule: Part‑Time Full‑Time
Pay: $22.68 – $23.82 per hour

Program Overview: Maintenance Trainee positions are part of the City’s Training and Employment Preparation Program. The Program offers hourly trainees the chance to learn job skills and gain work experience in one or more assignments. These are at‑will positions and may be terminated at any time without cause by the City of Lakewood. Full participation requires continued satisfactory performance; completion of the program does not guarantee further employment with the City.

Job Summary

The City of Lakewood seeks hard‑working, responsible candidates to fill a full‑time, limited‑term position and to create an eligibility list of Maintenance Trainee candidates the Public Works Department, Facilities Maintenance Division. Under direct supervision, trainees work with crews to learn and perform unskilled and semi‑skilled work in construction, maintenance, installation, and repair of City buildings, equipment, fixtures, and facilities. Trainees will participate in moderate‑to‑heavy manual labor, use a variety of tools and equipment, and apply basic safety techniques and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist skilled trades workers (carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter) and maintenance workers with tasks such as putting up, taking down, or repairing fences and walls
    , replacing or installing street name and non‑essential traffic signs or street sweeping signs
    , and repairing or replacing building ceiling tiles, signage, or fixtures
    .
  • Support renovation of park buildings and facilities, installation/repair of various types of doors, removal or replacement of locks, fixtures, and hardware.
  • Prepare, install, and remove concrete‑related items, perform brick work, painting, and graffiti removal.
  • Move furniture, fixtures, and equipment; perform swimming‑pool maintenance; and set up or take down public address or other electrical systems for city special events.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools used in construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of facilities.
  • Learn and apply safety procedures and practices related to all assigned tasks.
  • Work well with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
Education & Experience
  • High‑school graduation or equivalent.
  • Some general facilities maintenance experience is desired.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of Class “C” operator’s license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.
  • Trainees must be at least 18 years of age.
Skills & Abilities
  • Learn and perform unskilled skilled maintenance and repair work in a variety of settings using hand and power tools.
  • Perform heavy manual labor, including heavy lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Read, write, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Be safety conscious and apply all safety procedures and practices related to the work being performed.
  • Work well with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
Physical & Mental Demands
  • Perform a full range of body movements involving reaching, bending, stooping, and grasping.
  • Perform heavy lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Work in cramped spaces, stand and walk for long periods of time, and drive city vehicles.
  • Use hand power‑driven tools with dexterity; have normal vision and hearing.
Environmental Conditions
  • Exposure to variable weather conditions.
  • Noise from power‑driven tools and equipment.
  • Gas and chemical vapors from normal work duties and environment.
Selection Procedure
