General Description
This paraprofessional work provides excellent customer service, assists customers at service points, and supports the library. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for performance. This position can be scheduled during any daytime, evening, and weekend library hours.
This is a Part-Time Regular position.
This posting will close after the receipt of the first 25 qualified applicants or 2 weeks, whichever comes first.
Essential Functions- Provides excellent customer service to library users in person, on the phone, or online.
- Performs circulation functions at service desks, including financial transactions.
- Processes item records for upload to the online catalog.
- Executes designated opening and closing procedures within the unit or facility.
- Assists with collection maintenance, i.e., sorting, shelving, weeding, and repair.
- Prepares visually pleasing displays/signage highlighting library materials or programs.
- Assists library users with electronic devices, library databases and digital resources, general technology questions, and software, including Microsoft Office products and Internet browsers.
- Troubleshoots and corrects minor problems with office machines, i.e., copiers, printers, scanners, etc.
- Assists with preserving local history documents for public use.
- Provides reader's advisory assistance to library customers.
- Addresses problem behaviors on the general service floor and works through situations respectfully and professionally.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
- Impromptu public speaking to small groups within the library about services available.
- Compiles and submits statistical reports as needed.
- Provides customer feedback to supervisors.
- May assist with library classes, programs, and outreach events.
- May serve as person in charge of unit or library facility.
- May represent the library at conferences, workshops, training classes, and outreach events.
- May be asked to perform light custodial tasks.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Three (3) years of experience in office or library work.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered.
Special Requirements- May be required to possess a valid driver's license.
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Some college is preferred.
- Ability to interact with library users courteously, professionally, and efficiently.
- Ability to address library users in person when behaviors become a problem.
- Ability to accept, interpret, and implement both written and verbal directions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City of Lakeland staff, library staff members, and others in the library field at the local, regional, and state levels.
- Ability to address the public directly when behavior issues arise and contact appropriate emergency personnel.
- Proficient in the use of a computer, including keyboard skills.
- Proficient in the use of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, iPads, eReaders, etc.,
- Experience navigating the internet to find information.
- Knowledge of popular authors, films, and music for reader's advisory purposes.
- Knowledge of both print and digital resources to assist customers with their questions.
- Involves walking, standing, and sedentary periods; exerting up to 30 pounds of force regularly, and routine keyboard operations.
- The job risks exposure to normal environmental hazards.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, depth perception, and texture perception.
