Position OverviewThe Staff Accountant plays a key professional role in ensuring the financial accuracy, compliance, and operational strength of UWCF’s accounting functions.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, this role supports general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable and receivable oversight, payroll accounting support, designation accounting, and audit preparation.
This position requires strong analytical ability, technical proficiency, attention to detail, and sound professional judgment. The Staff Accountant is evaluated based on accuracy, timeliness, adherence to accounting standards, and commitment to strong internal controls.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and post journal entries including payroll, prepaid amortization, designations, investments, and general ledger adjustments.
- Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, receivables, payables, credit cards, restricted and unrestricted funds, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Monitor and support accounts payable and receivable processes, ensuring proper coding and donor intent compliance.
- Support payroll accounting functions including benefit allocations and functional expense tracking.
- Assist with annual budget preparation and monitor cost centers against approved budgets.
- Support grant accounting by tracking revenues and expenditures and maintaining documentation.
- Prepare audit schedules and assist with IRS Form 990 support documentation.
- Maintain cash requirement tracking and quarterly investment summaries.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience (nonprofit experience preferred).
- Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and audit preparation required.
- Fund accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Strong analytical and reconciliation skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Advanced Excel proficiency (pivot tables, complex formulas, financial modeling).
- Experience with accounting systems such as Financial Edge NXT, Blackbaud, or comparable platforms.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High ethical standards and commitment to stewardship and confidentiality.

Compensation & BenefitsSalary Range: $63,000 - $68,000, commensurate with experience.
