Position Summary:
Assesses, treats, and cares for patients with breathing disorders. Initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures; maintains patient records; and selects, assembles, checks, and operates equipment. Observation is a 10-bed unit where typically the patients that are admitted here are Observation status (meaning we anticipate that they will be discharged within 48 hours or less). The patient population consists of patients with diagnoses of chest pain, TIA (stroke like symptoms), or abdominal pain who require a bit more testing than would be feasible in the Emergency Department, but isn't quite enough to warrant an inpatient bed upstairs.
I like to say it's an off shoot of the ED. Once patients arrive to Obs, we review the plan of care with the patient and start any more workup that needs to be completed that has not already been done in the ED. Responsibilities
• Provides routine treatments and interventions consistent with the educational level and skills learned in the academic environment and demonstrated competency through Orlando Health.
• Performs advanced skills after achieving demonstrated competencies such as: nasogastric tube irrigation, suctioning, and removal; wound irrigation; complex dressing change; maintenance of enteral tube feeding (Dobhoff, Nasogastric, and Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy); and tracheostomy care.
• Performs increased or continuous visual observation for Baker Act, behavioral health, and suicide risk patients as assigned and utilizes the Safe Patient Room Environment Checklist during staff changes or transfer of care for Baker Act, behavioral health, and suicide risk patients.
• Assists patients with hygiene, mobility, and nutritional needs.
• Maintains safety and security of patients, families, self, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Ensures patient privacy, rights, and confidentiality.
• Follows standard precautions. Adheresto Hand Hygiene and PPE procedures.
• Communicates appropriate information regarding the patient's condition to the registered nurse (RN) and other members of the healthcare team.
