The Patient Sitter provides direct patient observation and input in planning care through communication with the RN and other patient care team members. The sitter is effectively involved with maintaining the standard of care for assigned patients through communication with the care team and maintains competency to provide a safe environment to those medical patients requiring close supervision because of behavioral health issues.
The sitter performs duties under the direct supervision of the RN.
The Patient Sitter is a full‑time daytime position in the Emergency Department. The sitter observes the patient, maintains a safe environment, and communicates with the RN and care team. The position reports to the Director of Emergency Department, is non‑exempt, and requires the AZ CNA license on hire or LNA license on hire.
How You’ll Contribute- Monitor vital signs, take blood glucose measurements, and record intake and output.
- Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, eating).
- Report abnormal assessment findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
- Keep patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly.
- Perform clerical duties aligned with nursing station activities.

- Certification:
Basic Life Support (BLS). - Minimum Education:
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred). - License: AZ CNA license on hire or LNA license on hire.
- Clear communication, observation, and listening skills.
- Physical ability to sit, stand, bend, brace, and lift as needed.
- Calm, confident manner and ability to remain calm during escalations or high stress.
- Maintain composure with distressed or combative patients.
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Work effectively in a stressful environment.
- Observe the patient and maintain continuous, unobstructed view.
- Notify the RN immediately if the patient complains of discomfort or restraint issues.
- Accompany patients for tests, procedures, and surgical holds.
- Prevent patients from pulling out lines/tubes and from leaving bed when ordered.
- Assist with ambulation, feeding, and bathing as approved by the RN.
- Engage patients in conversation, reading, or games to promote well‑being.
- Keep the patient’s dignity and privacy protected; keep the room door closed as appropriate.
- Do not use personal cell phone or make personal calls while on duty.
