Registered Nurse – Emergency Services Full Time Evenings
SalaryThe salary range for this position is $34.50 - $55.20 (Hourly Rate). Placement within the range is based on experience and internal equity. For union positions, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement.

The Registered Nurse (BSN) embodies the attributes of the Relationship Based Care model and performs to PPM core functions. Under the direction of department leadership, the RN consistently reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act, the organization’s Code of Ethics, and the Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies and regulatory standards.
ResponsibilitiesRelationship to Patient/Family and Community
- Perform comprehensive assessment on all assigned patients and complete documentation.
- Communicate changes in patient condition promptly.
- Develop realistic outcomes and measurable goals on the plan of care.
- Identify and prioritize patient needs and nursing diagnoses.
- Collaborate with patient, family, and health‑care team members during planning.
- Assess discharge planning needs and make appropriate referrals.
- Evaluate patient response to interventions and modify the plan of care as needed.
- Ensure complete discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, and provide information on patient portal usage.
- Support patient/family/spiritual/cultural needs during assessments.
- Use teach‑back methodology for medication education.
- Distribute Krames education materials and use Culture Vision resources.
- Treat patients, families, and staff with respect and dignity.
- Acknowledge contributions of significant others in care planning.
- Adhere to ethical standards of practice and call for ethics consults when appropriate.
- Implement interventions based on evidence‑based practice.
- Utilize resources such as Ovid/Joanna Briggs, Up To Date , and Culture Vision.
- Engage in clinical LADDER projects or unit/organizational process improvements.
- Demonstrate safe medication administration via bar coding.
- Promote patient health, safety, and rights.
- Convey accurate information during bedside shift reports.
- Round hourly with patient care technicians.
- Participate in unit safety initiatives and quality metrics.
- Prevent pressure ulcers, falls, CAUTIs, and central line infections.
- Serve as unit safety facilitator or quality initiative resource.
- Participate in unit huddles.
- Oversee support techs and manage patient care accountability.
- Demonstrate effective conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
- Serve as charge nurse/preceptor when assigned and coordinate unit care.
- Act as clinical lead during patient status changes.
- Mentor new staff, students, and system personnel.
- Provide peer evaluation feedback and participate in case reviews.
- Collaborate with hospital services for excellence in care.
- Communicate barriers to leadership and practice operations council.
- Document appropriate care orders in EMR for all admissions.
- Adhere to supply charging protocols.
- Participate in value‑based initiatives.
- Commit to decreasing overtime hours.
- Maintain complete electronic and paper documentation.
- Use Alaris pump guardrails and bed‑management system.
- Understand physiologic monitoring and its impact on care decisions.
- Identify new technologies for unit or system use.
- Participate in CEOC activities to optimize the medical record.
- Attend internal professional development, e.g., Schwartz Rounds, Nursing Grand Rounds.
- Obtain certification in nursing specialty.
- Demonstrate accountability for professional competencies and dress code.
- Participate in professional organizations.
- Take assigned lunch breaks.
