The salary range for this position is $20.74 - $30.08 (Hourly Rate).

Placement within this range is dependent on relevant work experience, internal equity, and, for union-represented positions, the collective bargaining agreement.

Schedule
:
Casual, 4 pm‑8 pm at the Lake Forest location with rotating to the Grayslake location when needed; 9 am‑2 pm in certain shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Apply thorough knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterilization procedures, infection control, workflow principles, equipment, and supply processing.
  • Disassemble, decontaminate, assemble, sterilize, and store procedure trays, instruments, and supplies per prescribed procedures and aseptic technique.
  • Follow the preference sheet to accurately dispense instruments and supplies to Surgery.
  • Perform daily tasks with flexibility, adhering to safety and infection control standards.
  • Use the Tray Tracking computer system in assigned areas.
  • Decontaminate, disinfect, and/or sterilize surgical instruments in compliance with established policies and infection control protocols.
  • Inspect, sort, and process surgical instrumentation per policy and procedures.
  • Report and isolate damaged and missing items to the Resource Coordinator and Manager.
  • Assemble and organize surgical instrument sets according to instrument count sheets.
  • Prepare instrument trays for sterilization by wrapping or using a sterilization container.
  • Perform quality assurance and biological testing on equipment and document results.
  • Operate ultrasonic cleaner, washer‑decontaminator, heat‑sealing apparatus, sterilizers, and cart washers within established guidelines.
  • Maintain logs, prepare, check, and record test results; approve or refuse materials from the sterilizer based on test results; report adverse results to management.
  • Execute proper procedures for equipment malfunctions.
  • Prepare and deliver accurate and timely case carts for surgical procedures.
  • Respond to instrument and supply requests from customers promptly.
  • Maintain a friendly, clean, and orderly work environment.
  • Check and reprocess expired items.
  • Accurately prepare and label items for the appropriate method of sterilization.
  • Act as a resource to other staff.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all department areas by rotating through assigned work areas to meet customer service needs.
  • Maintain National or International certification for sterile processing and distribution, and pursue continuing education.
  • Complete work from a previous shift to accommodate department schedules.
  • Dispense and deliver materials via dumbwaiter, tube system, elevator, and/or handcarts.
  • Serve as a preceptor during training of new employees.
  • Communicate issues, problems, and concerns to management in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for hand‑off communication to on‑coming staff.
  • Use established communication channels (e.g., Spectralink Phone) professionally, courteously, and tactfully when coverage is needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED, or 3 years of related equivalent experience.
  • National (CBSPD) or International (IAHCSMM) certification.
  • Experience and knowledge of surgical instrumentation, human anatomy, and basic medical terminology.
  • Experience and knowledge in the use of all sterilization processes, decontamination, packing, and shelf life, including aseptic techniques and their applications.
  • Physical Demands: A physical demands test will be administered to determine if a candidate can meet essential job tasks. The test is based on OSHA and NIOSH protocols.
    • Job Role Requirement:
      Lift up to 35 lbs, carry 65 inches, push/pull up to 50 lbs.

Preferred:

  • Three or more years of experience in OR instrumentation.
