North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health Care System is searching for a Social Work‑Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program with Mental Health Service at the Lake City location. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards and to the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program.

Qualifications

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student‑loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval—and award amount (up to $200 000) and eligibility period (one to five years)—are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after completing the application.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States citizenship:
    Applicant must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens can be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
  • English language proficiency:
    Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Education:

    Must possess a master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited.
  • A doctoral degree in social work may not substitute for the master’s degree.

  • Licensure:
    Person hired in the GS‑0185 series must be licensed or certified by a state to practice independently at the master’s level.

  • GS‑11 Social Worker Experience and Licensure:
    Appointment to GS‑11 requires completion of a minimum of one year of post‑MSW experience equivalent to the GS‑9 grade level in healthcare or similar settings, and licensure at the independent practice level.
  • Alternatively, a doctoral degree in social work may substitute for the required one year of professional experience in a clinical setting.
  • Applicants must demonstrate competencies (KSAOs) necessary for the position. Resume/CV must contain sufficient information to support claimed experience/education/training.
  • Key KSAOs include: counseling skills; assessment of psychosocial functioning; treatment planning; implementation of modalities; crisis intervention; relationship building; knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses; community resource knowledge; independent psychosocial assessment; consultation services; evidence‑based practice; and physical ability to meet demands.
  • Preferred experience:

    working on a multidisciplinary team with evidence‑based modalities.

Duties
  • Assigned to the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health Care System Mental Health Clinic in Lake City.
  • Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for mental health and psychosocial problems, including crisis situations, with evidence‑based interventions.
  • Conduct psychosocial/mental health assessments independently or collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, family members, caregivers, and significant others.
  • Develop patient‑centered treatment plans and achievable goals with the patient and family, collaborating with additional team providers.
  • Educate patients and families on available services, facilitating appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain updated resources within VA and community programs to provide education, information, and referrals that meet psychosocial and mental health needs.
  • Advocate by understanding bureaucratic challenges and acting in the best interest of patients and families.
