Overview

This is a professional staff position responsible for managing the Academic Success Center (ASC) which supports college preparatory courses (Principles of Writing, Principles of Reading, Developmental Arithmetic, and Intermediate Algebra), college credit courses, and/or vocational programs. The employee in this position will carry out responsibilities relating to the Academic Success Center, work in cooperation with the Director of Learning Resources, and be expected to carry out assignments with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise tutoring staff, perform tutor evaluations, create tutor scheduling, and manage time sheets.
  • Assist the Director of Learning Resources in the recruitment and selection of tutors.
  • Monitor budget expenditures and make recommendations to the Director of Learning Resources. Schedule and supervise TABE and PERT remedial instruction in the ASC.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate new academic support strategies and techniques for the ASC.
  • Orient students to lab operations and procedures.
  • Train student assistants in lab procedures and supportive software.
  • Supervise the installation of new hardware and software in the lab in coordination with the Technology Department.
  • Assess student remediation needs.
  • Work with individual students seeking academic assistance in the lab.
  • Monitor student progress and report to the Director of Learning Resources.
  • Perform large group presentations.
  • Cooperate with Admissions Counselors to reach new traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Assist the Director of Learning Resources in visits to classrooms as needed to inform students of ASC resources and assist instructors as needed.
  • Promote the academic tutoring programs and services to FGC students and faculty.
  • Prepare promotional materials.
  • Notify Technology Help Desk of printer problems, report damage, and request repairs to building proctor tests as needed.
  • Requisition office and educational supplies.
  • Create and post signs for building and college announcements.
  • Record keeping and reporting of utilized ASC resources; assist with TRIO services as needed.
  • Assist with Boot-Camp and Summer Academy students.
  • May occasionally be required to work a flexible schedule.
  • Additional responsibilities as determined. This is not a complete statement of all duties; employees may be required to perform other job-related marginal duties as required.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the procedures, practices and services related to academic support centers.
  • Knowledge of sources of information relative to learning/tutorial centers.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Knowledge of the college mission and of goals and objectives in meeting the mission.
  • Ability to support the operation of a tutoring/academic support center in an effective manner.
  • Ability to relate to and communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to analyze center processes and procedures and to evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the activities of academic tutoring support staff.
Education and Experience

Associates degree plus two years related experience.

Essential Physical Skills
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Light to moderate (up to 44 pounds) lifting and carrying.
  • Use of fingers.
  • Walking. Standing. Kneeling.
