Patient Care Tech - PRN

Position Overview

Lake Charles Memorial Health System, a major teaching facility, is seeking a Nursing Assistant to provide direct patient support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Charge Nurse. The assistant will observe patients, maintain a safe environment, and communicate changes to nursing staff.

• Under the supervision of an RN, provide close observation of patients, maintain a safe and clean environment, and communicate with nursing staff regarding any changes to a patient’s activity or behavior.
• Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) including feeding, grooming, dressing, tidying, toileting, and bathing.
• Obtain verbal reports from the patient’s nurse regarding diagnosis, vision, auditory, or language barriers and other identified needs.
• Position self in the patient’s room at the bedside to maintain constant visual observation; do not leave the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.
• Provide patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction while applying principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients, families, and other health‑care members.
• Support testing and procedures by remaining within arm’s length of the patient unless otherwise directed.
• Observe the patient’s activity and behavior, communicate observations regularly to the nurse, and receive direction on what to report and to whom.
• Accurately and legibly record data collected and notify the nurse of any changes.
• Demonstrate understanding and responsibilities during emergency codes and situations.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Preferred experience as a sitter, nursing assistant, or medical assistant.
• Basic computer skills.
• Current CPR certification.
• Ability to recognize changes in patient behavior and report those changes to the nurse.

• Work involves a variety of physical activities including sitting, standing, and walking.
• Bending, stooping, and lifting are minimal.
• Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
• Must have normal hearing or utilize adaptive hearing devices.
• Ability to assist with transfer and positioning of patients.
