Essential FunctionsThis temporary assignment is a fantastic opportunity for those seeking to begin a career in water. The FLOW Initiative encourages future talent to consider water as a career and equip those already in the industry with the leadership skills necessary to maintain our safe water supply and make it sustainable.
The Operations Intern will report directly to the Superintendent of Operations and work alongside the Operations Administration team.
This internship will provide the applicant the opportunity to apply knowledge acquired in the classroom to real‑world situations to gain hands‑on work experience in water use management and field operations. In this role, the chosen applicant will monitor water use at Moulton Niguel Water District (MNWD) owned sites, make recommendations for conservation, assess irrigation systems at District owned sites, and direct work orders to landscape contractors.
Qualifications- Undergraduate student, attending an accredited community college or university in good standing with a study emphasis in Water Utility Science, Water Technology, Engineering, Public Administration, Plant Science, Horticulture, General Landscape Design, Water Conservation or a closely related field.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and have comprehensive computer skills.
- Part‑time position: up to 24 hours a week between Tuesday and Thursday; authorized up to 960 hours per fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) and no more than 130 hours in any given month.
- Must be able to start employment no later than May 2026.
- Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl when out in the field.
- Must be able to work in an environment that could produce exposure to dust, dirt, significant temperature changes, and inclement weather.
- Must be able to communicate orally with District staff in face‑to‑face, one‑on‑one settings.
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended time periods.
- Must have hearing, vision, and eye‑hand coordination sufficient to maintain good awareness while performing field work.
- Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.
- Earn up to twenty‑four (24) hours of paid sick leave per year.
- Accrued at the rate of one (1) hour for every thirty (30) hours worked.
- Permitted to use paid sick leave beginning on the 90th day of employment.
- Permitted to carry over paid sick leave to the following year of employment, up to a maximum of forty‑eight (48) hours of sick leave.
The District and the employee each contribute the 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare mandatory contributions.
