The City of Laguna Beach is excited to announce that we are accepting applications for the position of Assistant City Engineer in the Public Works and Utilities Department. The Assistant City Engineer, while reporting to the City Engineer, administers and oversees several staff members and functions of the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Typical areas of involvement, expertise, and oversight for this position are in engineering development review and permitting, parking, traffic, and circulation, NPDES program compliance and oversight, utility coordination, storm drain planning, and pavement management.

QualificationsAny combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
- Education: Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
- Experience: Five years of professional civil engineering experience including review of private developments, issuance of public works permits, and design and construction contract administration of public works projects is required, along with at least two years of supervising professional engineering staff. Experience in traffic engineering and/or development review is desirable.
- License/Certificate Requirements: A valid Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering issued by the State of California must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Applications will be screened carefully and selected applicants will be invited to undergo a Structured Panel Interview to evaluate their knowledge, skills and abilities.
The appointing hiring authority will further review the job‑related qualifications of applicants deemed eligible before making selection decisions and may require a written exam. The selection process may be modified based on the needs of the City.
Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice. Education and employment verification and reference check(s) will also be conducted.
