Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager, Assistant Manager or Supervisor, performs technical and non‑technical duties within the Laboratory service areas on the hospital campus. The LSSS II is fully proficient in their area of expertise and will serve as an expert / lead in their assigned area. Performs all functions that relate to obtaining or processing patient specimens while maintaining customer confidence and satisfaction.

  • Accuracy:
    Maintains acceptable accuracy in‑patient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing.
  • Critical Thinking:
    Uses knowledge and experience to evaluate and investigate specimen problems that arise.
  • Job Knowledge:
    Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures.
  • Productivity:
    Practices organizational skills for efficiency of time, materials, cost and availability of lab data.
  • Communication:
    Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution and hand‑off to team members.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Will take on lead duties in the absence of the supervisor or manager.
  • Technical / HIS / LIS:
    Ability to operate in multiple computer systems simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Customer Service Support:
    Communicates effectively and courteously with all customers while maintaining privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Specimen receipt and processing:
    Handle all patient specimens appropriately for tests indicated.
  • Phlebotomy:
    Maintain Phlebotomy competency if appropriate for the department.
  • Education and training for new employees:
    Responsible for assisting in orientation and training of new staff for the department.
  • Key Operator for the Pre‑Analytics and Storage Unit:
    Monitors system functions, performs daily maintenance, troubleshoots errors, and ensures proper loading and off‑loading of samples.
  • Outpatient Registration (if required):
    Check lab orders for accuracy, follows Medicare regulations, captures information in Wellstar HIS, orders tests, and ensures time‑bound stats.
  • Microbiology Processing (if required):
    Performs specimen processing, reporting, and resolves problems; prepares media; maintains QC organisms; performs routine maintenance and trains new employees.
  • Blood Bank Component Processing (if required):
    Prepares products for transfusion, maintains equipment, logs activities, handles STAT duties, and communicates information per policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all Well Star Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required

Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma (General or GED General)
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or ARC‑BLS – American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS‑I – Basic Life Support Instructor
Required Minimum Experience

Experience in specimen processing in an outpatient or hospital laboratory environment.

Required Minimum Skills

Strong written and verbal communication, customer service, multi‑tasking and organizational skills, professionalism, detail orientation, team‑oriented, data entry and computer proficiency. Demonstrates leadership in area of expertise.
