Job Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides support to physicians and other healthcare professionals by performing clinical and administrative tasks to ensure efficient patient care delivery. The MA works closely with patients, handling both front‑ and back‑office functions in a fast‑paced medical setting. The MA functions under the direction of the Nurse Supervisor and/or Practice/Office Manager. Key responsibilities include gathering and recording vital signs and other pertinent patient information, preparing patients for exams, assisting during treatments, coordinating tests and follow‑up care, and recording treatment in the medical record.

The MA keeps patient safety and experience at the center of care delivery and serves patients of all ages.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Clinical Duties and Expectations
    :
    Provide relationship‑based, patient‑centered care that is consistent with population‑specific characteristics, adapt service delivery to reflect cultural diversity, prepare patients for the visit, prepare rooms and equipment, aid physicians/APPs, carry out orders, respond to patient requests, maintain patient safety, and support front‑office operations as needed.
  • Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
    :
    Deliver patient care in accordance with recognized clinical practice guidelines and standards set by the American Association of Medical Assistants or similar organizations; adhere to federal, state, and local laws and regulations and uphold all Wellstar policies, procedures, and clinical competencies.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
    :
    Collaborate with providers, nurses, and clinical staff to uphold continuity of care; participate in daily huddles, staff meetings, and quality improvement initiatives; serve as a preceptor to assist onboarding and training of new team members.
  • Professional Development and Initiative
    :
    Complete all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments and mandatory education; identify areas for improvement and suggest innovative solutions; seek relevant training or mentorship to continuously improve.
  • Resources and Support
    :
    Use medical supplies and medications efficiently, minimize waste, alert supervisors when supplies are low, provide staffing coverage as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.
Required

Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma General or GED General or Other / Certificate Medical Assisting
Required Minimum Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC‑BLS - American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS‑I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
  • CMA - Certified Medical Assistant or MEDCA - Certified Clinical & Administrative Medical Assistant or NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant or RMA - Registered Medical Assistant or CCMA - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
Additional Licenses and Certifications

Current certification from one of the following medical assisting credentialing bodies: AAMA (CMA), AMT (RMA), NHA (CCMA), NCCT (NCMA), NAHP (NRCMA). Upon Hire Required.

Required Minimum Experience

Experience in the physician practice setting. Preferred and minimum 1 year experience in the area or specialty the candidate is applying for.

  • Must be able to work quickly and efficiently to assure patient comfort and satisfaction.
  • High ability to read, write and speak English; basic computer skills required.
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail.
  • High ability to engage in teamwork and maintain positive working relationships.
