OverviewThis job delivers medications to designated areas under close supervision and according to detailed instructions, policies, and procedures. It includes refilling and maintaining automated dispensing machines; pricing manual medication orders, inventorying and reordering stock in the pharmacy; entering data into a computer system and printing labels; reviewing physicians’ orders and entering patient medication orders into the pharmacy order entry system; identifying problems with orders and notifying the pharmacist or nursing when clarification or patient information (e.g., allergies, height, weight) is needed;
accurately compounding IV admixtures and other assigned preparations using aseptic technique; maintaining stock in all assigned areas and performing related clerical duties (typing, answering phone, filing, greeting nurses and physicians at the Pharmacy window).
- Ensure customer service and teamwork while conducting responsibilities.
- Fill medication orders, charge/credit all medication, stock, deliver, and inspect assigned areas.
- Prepare IV admixtures and other extemporaneous compounds and enter TPN orders into the computer system.
- Maintain competency in professional growth and responsibilities.
- Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, introduction to the patient, adapting explanations of services or procedures, requesting permissions, and communication style.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
- Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
- Skills to operate standard pharmacy and office equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule (e.g., 24/7, weekend, holiday, on‑call availability).
High School diploma or equivalent.
Work ExperiencePreferred: 1 year hospital experience.
CertificationsCurrent Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice.
Physical and Environmental DemandsMedium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently or >10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands exceed those for sedentary work. No exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, and no obligation to perform emergency care or first aid. Incumbents are not at occupational risk for exposure to communicable disease, but may have exposure to hazardous medications or waste within the environment during receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste.
