The Open Space Educator independently develops and delivers engaging, inclusive environmental education and interpretation programs for diverse audiences. This role leads public and private programs, partners with schools and youth corps, provides roving interpretation, collaborates across departments, and supports outreach and marketing efforts to connect the community with Colorado’s natural landscapes.

This a part-time position working 20-29 hours per week with some weekend work.

Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

TYPICAL

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Thorough understanding of Colorado local flora, fauna, ecosystems, and natural history.
  • Principles of interpretation and environmental education.
  • Risk awareness and participant safety in outdoor settings.
SKILL:
  • Program development and facilitation for varied age groups and learning styles.
  • Public speaking, informal interpretation in outdoor environments, and written communication.
  • Development of interpretive and marketing materials using design platforms (e.g., Canva, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Outreach, partnership-building, and basic program marketing.
ABILITIES:
  • Work independently to plan, deliver, and evaluate programs.
  • Engage diverse communities and adapt programs for different age groups.
  • Work effectively outdoors in varied weather and terrain.
  • Exercise sound judgement in participant safety and program delivery.
TRAINING:

High school diploma or equivalent required; additional college-level coursework in environmental science, education, natural resources, or related field preferred. Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of two (2) years developing and leading nature-based education programs for all ages, preferably in Colorado. Minimum of one (1) year developing interpretive materials such as flyers, signage, brochures, and social media graphics; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Design, develop, coordinate and lead public and private environmental education programs for diverse audiences.
  • Deliver curriculum-aligned programs in partnership with schools, youth corps, and community organizations.
  • Provide roving interpretation on open space properties to enhance visitor experience and stewardship.
  • Develop interpretive materials including signage, educational materials, program content, and digital communications.
  • Conduct outreach and promote programs through marketing, and community engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to co-lead programs and support citywide initiatives.
  • Ensure programs are inclusive, culturally responsive, and accessible.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to obtain & maintain CPR Certification.
