The City of Lafayette’s Parks, Trails & Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs, community events, and enrichment opportunities for residents of all ages, with the Lafayette Community Center serving as a vibrant hub for year‑round activity. Nestled among oak trees along Lafayette Creek, the Community Center is a welcoming gathering place where families, youth, teens, and older adults come together for after school enrichment, arts and cultural programs, fitness and wellness classes, summer camps, senior services, and community‑wide seasonal events.

Through its diverse programming and inviting setting, the Community Center plays a central role in supporting learning, recreation, and connection across the community.

What You'll Do

The Assistant Recreation Coordinator plays a key role in supporting daily program operations at the Community Center by assisting Recreation Coordinators and Supervisors in implementing high-quality recreation programs, supervising staff and volunteers, supporting community events, and helping ensure that City recreation facilities are safe, organized, and welcoming for all participants. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise, schedule, train, and provide functional direction to primarily part-time recreation staff and volunteers
  • Lead and facilitate recreation activities such as group games, sports, arts & crafts, and enrichment programs
  • Assist with planning program curriculum and implementing daily recreation program operations
  • Assign staff roles and support development and implementation of program activities
  • Set up, organize, monitor, and maintain recreation equipment, supplies, and activity spaces
  • Ensure recreation facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming for public use
  • Interact with participants and parents while modeling and enforcing program and facility safety rules
  • Maintain attendance, activity logs, and related program documentation using recreation registration software
  • Assist with purchasing supplies and materials for assigned programs
  • Support marketing and outreach efforts through email, flyers, and social media
  • Assist with seasonal community events and Youth Commission-related activities
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and other assigned duties
Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Knowledge of recreation programming, activity planning, and service delivery needs for diverse age groups
  • Understanding of basic staff, contractor, and volunteer supervision and training practices
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, review, and evaluate recreation programs and daily operations
  • Skill in leading groups through organized recreation and enrichment activities
  • Familiarity with safety practices, first aid, CPR, and emergency response procedures
  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, regulations, policies, and facility rules
  • Strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and effectively represent the City when interacting with the public
  • Proficiency with modern office software, recreation registration systems, and record keeping practices
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants, vendors, and the public
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment
  • Ability to obtain American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certifications within three (3) months of hire
  • Completion of a pre-employment tuberculosis test and ongoing TB clearance for working with minors
Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
