Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision and medical direction, perform respiratory care related procedures with considerable judgment in accordance with the physician's treatment plan and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assess resident condition, administer prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, observe and record progress and response to therapy, including adverse reactions.
  • Provide in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff; coordinate with residents, families and facility teams as needed for ongoing care.
  • Manage resident populations (primarily adult and geriatric) and apply growth and development knowledge to meet physical and psychological needs.
  • Involve appropriate parties in assessment, treatment, and continuing care as needed.
  • Initiate, monitor, and maintain life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility; perform airway care and maintenance; manage artificial ventilator status per protocol; maintain and troubleshoot ventilators; participate in CPR procedures as part of the emergency team.
  • Initiate, monitor, and document performance of various respiratory care modalities.
  • Assess residents’ cardiopulmonary status using physical assessment, history, labs, radiology, and pulmonary function testing to formulate a respiratory care plan ordered by a physician.
  • Perform pre-treatment checks (e.g., review orders, determine diagnosis, therapy details, medication, FiO2, and frequency) and review resident charts for history and precautions; observe and chart vital signs and breathing, and educate residents on therapies.
  • Administer technical respiratory care procedures, dispense medications as prescribed, select and adjust devices for therapy, and document observations and outcomes; communicate pertinent information to the resident's nurse.
  • Inspect, test, and maintain equipment; manage supplies; perform related administrative duties and proper disposal of equipment.
  • Assist in emergency CPR/ACLS as part of the healthcare team; CPR certification is required.
  • Initiate, administer, evaluate response to, and document all therapy modalities per departmental procedures and physician orders (e.g., IPPB, nebulizers, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, and related techniques).
  • Recognize adverse reactions to therapies and take appropriate action; document all resident care services.
  • Accept and transcribe verbal orders related to respiratory care procedures.
  • Set up, maintain, and log all oxygen and respiratory supplies and equipment as required.
  • Instruct residents and families in the rationale and methods of respiratory procedures to enhance cooperation and treatment effectiveness; work toward rehabilitation goals.
  • Attend internal and external educational programs and read professional journals to maintain and enhance skills; participate in interdisciplinary rounds and quality assurance data collection.
