This is a standard position description for substitute para educator roles with similar duties, responsibilities, classification, and compensation. Substitute para educators may or may not perform all the essential functions listed below.
This description does not constitute an employment contract and is subject to change based on the employer’s needs.
Part I:Position Summary
The Para educator performs instructional and support duties to assist in instruction, supervision, and education of students either in groups or one-on-one. May work with students individually or in small groups to complete assigned tasks and keep students on task.

Part II:Supervision and Controls over the Work
Paraeducators work under the daily supervision of supported staff and under the oversight of the Principal or Designee. They follow specific directions from teachers and are responsible for understanding and applying school/district policies, including IDEA and Section 504 requirements.
Part III:Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist teachers with assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safety, and promoting social growth, in classrooms including special education settings.
- Assist students with daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, including diapering and providing health-related support like changing dressings, assisting with oxygen, insulin, nebulizers, or mobility aids.
- Follow approved procedures to restrain students at risk of harming themselves or others.
- Escort students during recess, playground, and bus transportation.
- Communicate respectfully and confidentially with students, parents, and community members, following staff guidance and policies.
- Supervise safety activities such as recess, bus duty, crossing guard, and hallway supervision, intervening in unsafe situations.
- Provide instructional support and tutoring in various settings.
- Support visual and instructional modifications to facilitate student engagement.
- Teach social skills and organizational strategies under supervision.
- Use behavior management plans to support a positive learning environment, communicating effectively with staff.
- Supervise limited disciplinary measures and document student behavior to support educational planning.
- Assist with clerical duties as needed, such as copying, record keeping, and communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with student-specific responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to work amidst interruptions and changing priorities.
- Ability to manage students who may be emotional or distressed.
- Remain calm and focused in challenging interactions.
- Follow directions and take initiative.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Support classroom management and discipline procedures.
- Exhibit strong command of English language skills.
- Organize work efficiently and protect student confidentiality.
- Work collaboratively with staff, students, and families.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Two years of experience working with children in educational settings, or equivalent education.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
- Willingness to learn inclusive strategies for students with disabilities.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Must be able to lift/move 25-50 pounds, assist with student safety, and perform physical tasks related to student support. Work may involve exposure to weather, chemicals, bodily fluids, and infectious materials. Safety equipment may be required. Travel in school vehicles may be necessary.
