Description of Work

The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture leads innovative research to advance resilient food systems, plant science, and agricultural sustainability for Nebraska and the world.

As a Field Research Manager – Small Grains Breeding Program, you will:

  • Oversee day‑to‑day management of research and field activities for the small grains breeding program.
  • Supervise graduate student and postdoc field projects to support Small Grains breeding program research and cultivate development activities.
  • Serve as primary contact and facilitate communications among breeder, other project support staff, farm managers, facilities manager, collaborating faculty, and farmer stakeholders for all small grains breeding field research projects.
  • Lead and carry out recommendations for fertilizer, fungicide, and weed management of crops at all field locations (8 throughout state of Nebraska).
  • Ensure accurate, safe, and timely data collection.
  • Ensure safe operation, maintenance, and calibration of all Small Grains Breeding program equipment and coordinate with company representatives for annual service.
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained and inspected to ensure compliance with University Transportation and safe operations.
  • Coordinate, document, and maintain seed storage inventory for Small Grains Breeding Program at the Stewart Seed Lab and cold storage facilities on East Campus and the Havelock Research Farm.
  • Maintain or obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator and commercial driver’s license (Class

    A) certification.

Minimum

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy or a related field plus four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of agricultural chemicals, research operations, and farm equipment, including tractors, planters, sprayers, and research combines.
  • Computer proficiency, including basic data collection, analysis, and report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and make safe/sound operational decisions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification within six months of hire.
  • Hold or obtain commercial driver’s license (Class

    A) for transportation of equipment across the state using large pickups and trailers.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in varying field conditions.
  • Ability to travel for 3‑5 days for planting, plot management, data collection, and harvest.
Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:

  • Master’s degree in Agronomy or a related field.
  • Experience in project management and database management.
  • Experience in staff supervision or team leadership.
