Position: Maintenance Worker I (part-time)

Overview

The City of La Verne is accepting applications for Maintenance Worker I and Maintenance Worker II positions within the Public Works Department – Streets and Parks Divisions
.

This recruitment is intended to fill part-time positions
. Highly qualified and experienced candidates may be considered for full-time appointment based on departmental needs, candidate qualifications, and evaluation during the recruitment process.

Part-Time Maintenance Worker
Hourly Rate Range: $22.85 – $27.77

Full-Time Maintenance Worker (Based on Qualifications and Departmental Needs)
Annual Salary Range: $42,776 – $51,994

Work Schedule
Full-time positions operate on a four (4) day workweek, Monday through Thursday
.
Part-time schedules are assigned based on departmental needs and may include flexible hour.

The ideal candidate is a dependable, safety-conscious individual who takes pride in maintaining public infrastructure and community spaces. This candidate is physically capable of performing demanding outdoor maintenance work and is willing to work in varying weather conditions and flexible schedules, including emergencies and special events.

The candidate has experience or interest in street, park, or landscape maintenance, construction, or related work and is comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and light to medium equipment. They are able to perform tasks such as lifting and carrying heavy materials, bending, stooping, climbing, and working in confined spaces or uneven terrain. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, communicate clearly with supervisors and team members, and interact professionally with the public.

Highly qualified candidates seeking full-time consideration will bring extensive hands-on experience in streets or parks maintenance, demonstrate leadership and problem-solving skills, and show a strong commitment to public service and maintaining City assets.

(Duties may include, but are not limited to)

  • Perform maintenance and repair of streets, hardscapes, alleys, sidewalks, and related infrastructure
  • Perform park and landscape maintenance including turf care, irrigation, trees, and facilities support
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and light to medium equipment
  • Assist with concrete, asphalt, and minor construction work
  • Perform traffic control and work safely in the public right-of-way
  • Respond to service requests and assist with special events or emergency operations

Physical activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • See well enough to read blueprints and standard text.
  • Hear and speak well enough to converse in person, over the radio, and on the telephone and be understood.
  • Stoop, bend, reach to pick up material, crawl into confined spaces, traverse rough terrain, climb into and out of trenches and climb ladders up to 15 feet high to inspect work.
  • Use arms, hands, and fingers to write, draw diagrams, operate personal computer, use hand tools.
  • Perform overhead tasks using hand tools.
  • Lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Have the stamina to work in severe weather during a regular work schedule and beyond in the event of emergencies

Minimum Qualifications

Part-Time Maintenance Worker

  • Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to perform maintenance work
  • Some experience in construction, landscaping, parks maintenance, street maintenance, or related work is desirable
  • Ability to perform physical labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
  • Ability to work flexible hours as assigned

Full-Time Maintenance Worker (Consideration Based on Qualifications)

  • Five (5) or more years of direct experience in streets, parks, construction, or related maintenance work
  • Demonstrated experience with tools, equipment, and materials related to the assigned division
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and traffic control procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, Class A or B preferred.
