POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for development, implementation, and maintenance of high quality breastfeeding education for parents and families as well as nursing and medical staff, prenatal/postnatal education, consultation and resource.

Shift: Days

Hours:

Schedule: Monday - Friday. Overnight shifts occasionally required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Caring and Clinical Performance

Assesses each patient's biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, spiritual, cultural, self-care, educational and discharge planning based on age and developmental status.

Utilizes the caring behaviors of empathy, active listening and cultural sensitivity and maintains patient dignity.

A 20-30 minute visit to all breastfeeding mothers during hospitalization. Visit to include observation and assessment of mother-infant nursing and instruction and guidance on:

Proper latch on
Proper positioning
Nipple and breast care
Feeding schedules

Follow up phone call postpartum to every discharged patient.

Maintain charting, records, and statistics on patients counseled.

Develop and present continuing education for nursing and other interested staff.

Act as a resource to patients, families, nursing and medical staff, and ancillary departments.

Prenatal/postnatal counseling available by appointment.

Develop and conduct regular breastfeeding classes for the community.

Continually update policies as needed.
