Overview
DEFINITION:
Supervise and work with the lifeguards on duty for general operating hours or pool parties as first responder in the case of an emergency during any swimming activity and/or event at municipal pools. Including but not limited to making appropriate rescues for any victim, performing CPR for any breathing or cardiac emergency, as well as providing minor first aid. Head Lifeguards will also be responsible for maintaining the appearance of the facility, resolving customer complaints or issues, acting as a deck supervisor, and pool water chemical testing & documentation.

Receives direct supervision from Pool Managers and Aquatic Coordinators. Exercises supervision over Lifeguards during each shift.
Essential Job Functions- Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
- Prevent accidents and eliminate or minimize hazardous situations.
- Respond quickly to all emergencies.
- Administer any emergency first aid needed by the victim of an accident.
- Resolve customer complaints in a professional manner.
- Educate patrons and inform them of the purpose of pool rules and regulations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary facility.
- Enforce the rules and regulations of the facility and verify that lifeguard staff are doing the same.
- Responsible for lifeguard shift attendance, appropriately documenting any no-shows or call-ins. Responsible for attempting to find coverage when short staffed.
- Complete reports such as shift reports and time sheets during or at the end of each shift.
- Verify all lifeguards have completed their paperwork and job duties, including all cleaning duties.
- Establish the lifeguard rotation schedule at the beginning of each shift.
- Monitor lifeguard scanning and surveillance techniques, and correct if not up to standards.
- Test pool water chemistry hourly and ensure chemical levels are acceptable for swimming.
- Document pool water chlorine and pH levels in the appropriate chemical logs.
- Contact the Pool Maintenance Technician whenever necessary for water or equipment issues.
- Check on lifeguards frequently during rotations and assist them when needed.
- Perform frequent restroom checks for cleanliness and restocking of supplies.
- Supervise the pool deck during lifeguard 10-min breaks or whenever the pool has been cleared.
- Attend all in-service training sessions as scheduled. Perform related duties as assigned.

- Reaching above shoulder level; pushing, pulling.
- Lifting up to 50 pounds; carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Using both hands for simple and firm grasping.
- Clarity of hearing; fine finger manipulation; operation of calculator.
- Pool vacuums, pool mechanical equipment, and a variety of hand tools.
- Must be 16 years or older.
- Knowledge of facility rules + policies & procedures regarding American Red Cross Lifeguarding.
- Demonstrate supervisory, decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Must be self-motivated, accountable, and dependable, as well as hold lifeguards accountable.
- Must be safety conscious & observant and should have a conviction for any safety concerns.
- Be available to work 4 - 5 days per week including some weekends.
- Have reliable transportation.
- Swim 200 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke.
- Tread water 2 minutes using legs only. (Candidates should place their hands under the armpits).
- Retrieve a 10lb brick from a depth of at least 7 ft and swim 20 yards back to wall and exit pool within a time limit of 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
Licenses And CertificatesMust hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification or renew upon hire. Must hold a current First Aid & CPR w/AED Certification or renew upon hire.
