The State Highway Administration's District 5 – Charles County (LaPlata Shop) and Anne Arundel County (Annapolis Shop) are recruiting for two (2) Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice (HEMT) positions. This is an Interview and Hire position open to applicants who meet the minimum qualifications listed below.
Nature of WorkThis position will perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment. The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice is the entry level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment.
Responsibilities- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

- Notes:
- Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
- U.S. Armed Forces military service experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
- Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for two years of the required education.
- Certification as a Master Technician by ASE can be substituted for the required education.
- Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in Maryland (must be listed on the application).
- Possibility of obtaining a Class B Commercial Driver's License during the probationary period.
- Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on equipment.
- Eligibility to complete agency certification programs for permanent status.
- Special Requirements: This position is essential and may require availability to work 24 hours/day, 7 days/week during inclement weather or emergencies.
- Respond to emergency situations and be reachable after work hours.
- On-call duties and continuous operation requirements may apply.
- Pre-employment drug testing may be required; random or post-accident testing may be conducted.
- Employees may be subject to substance abuse testing.
