Part-time Temporary Faculty – Visual Arts

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a two-time Aspen Award-winning institution (top 15% of Community Colleges) with academic programs in over 100 disciplines.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and instruct courses at CSM campuses, centers, or clinical locations.
  • Ensure classes are held as scheduled and communicate absences or schedule changes.
  • Maintain high subject expertise and stimulate enthusiasm for the discipline.
  • Design meaningful units or lessons with appropriate content and methods.
  • Apply approved course syllabi and meet required duration.
  • Study and utilize students’ learning styles to facilitate best teaching and learning situations.
  • Incorporate instructional technologies as appropriate.
  • Maximize learning opportunities for each student.
  • Keep students informed and updated about course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements.
  • Promptly grade papers and other work and inform students of their progress throughout the semester or term.
  • Demonstrate genuine concern for each student through individual student conferences as needed.
  • File appropriate course syllabi with the program coordinator and the HEA administrative assistant.
  • Ensure each course section is web‑enhanced and make use of available college online resources.
  • Use the college Group Wise email system for professional communication with a response time of 48–72 hours.
  • Keep the Course or Program Coordinator informed of any student concerns or conduct violations within 48 hours of the incident.
  • Maintain accurate scholastic records, including attendance records.
  • Conduct class evaluations and complete other college evaluations in accordance with college policy.
  • Submit academic reports and other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Attend all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by college leadership.
  • Familiarize fully with all college policies and the Faculty Handbook and convey college‐related information to students in a timely manner.
  • Participate in program and curriculum review and development and student learning outcomes assessment initiatives.
  • Recommend instructional materials, including textbooks and laboratory equipment, to the Course Coordinator, Program Coordinator, Division Chair, or designee.
  • Make suggestions to improve the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the college.
  • Keep informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities and submit continuing education records to the Program Coordinator and/or HEA Administrative Assistant.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in the discipline of instruction or a Master’s in any field AND 15 hours in the discipline OR sufficient experience in lieu of either requirement, as approved by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for student learning and ability to respond to students’ needs using a variety of teaching methods, including new technologies.
  • Subject matter/content expertise in your field.
