Position: Adjunct Faculty Pool: Sign Language Instructor in the Department of English and Communication

Overview

Location:

45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, in a history-rich community of southern Maryland. The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) offers health insurance benefits;
State Retirement Pension plan; wellness programs; early closure Fridays in summer; college closure for spring break and major holidays; and other flexibilities. This is a part-time faculty position in the Department of English and Communication. The department teaches English, ESL, English Composition, Communication, and Reading. CSM is seeking a Beginning and Intermediate American Sign Language Instructor who can teach virtually using Zoom with synchronous interaction.

A strong background in American Sign Language is required.

CSM is looking for a dynamic individual who can implement the comprehensive mission of a community college by assessing, documenting, and improving student learning through instruction.

Note: CSM accepts resumes for part-time temporary faculty for all areas at all times. There may or may not be a hiring need at this time in your area of interest. Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, and evaluate classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning.
  • Perform assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on the campus(es) or center to which the faculty member is assigned.
  • Teach assigned course(s) throughout the academic year; schedule, publish, and hold one office hour per week during the academic year (fall and spring semesters).
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and perform professional service hours.
Essential Job Functions

At minimum, the faculty member must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Teaching Functions: plan, organize, and instruct courses; ensure classes are held as scheduled and communicate changes; maintain expertise and stimulate enthusiasm in subject areas; plan each unit or lesson to make classes meaningful; ensure programs/classes have essential curricular components and currency; teach according to approved syllabi for the required duration; use students’ learning styles to facilitate learning; incorporate instructional technologies as appropriate.
  • Administrative/Student Engagement: maximize learning opportunities; keep students informed about course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance; provide prompt feedback and grades; demonstrate concern for students through individual conferences as needed.
Administrative and Professional Expectations
  • File appropriate course syllabi with the program coordinator and HEA administrative assistant; ensure course sections are web-enhanced; utilize college online resources; communicate professionally using the college email system with a 48–72 hour response time; inform coordinators of student concerns within 48 hours of incidents.
  • Maintain accurate scholastic records, conduct class evaluations, submit academic reports in a timely manner; attend faculty meetings and development activities; comply with college policies and procedures; become familiar with the Faculty Handbook and convey college information to students timely.
  • Participate in program improvement, curriculum review, and student learning outcomes assessment initiatives; recommend textbooks and instructional materials as appropriate; contribute to curriculum improvements aligned with college objectives.
  • Engage in professional development and keep informed of current instructional trends; submit continuing education records as required.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in the discipline of instruction OR Master’s in any field AND 15 hours in the discipline OR sufficient experience in lieu of either requirement, as approved by the Provost.
  • Subject matter/content expertise in Language and Literature with ability to demonstrate teaching expertise; enthusiasm and passion for student learning; ability to use diverse teaching methods including new technologies.
