Overview
Approx. 25 - 28 hours per week. This position is typically scheduled to work Monday through Friday, between the hours of 4:00 pm and 10:30 pm. Scheduling may change to accommodate the needs of the department. Under close supervision, performs manual and semi-skilled maintenance work of streets, parkways, civic facilities, athletic facilities, aquatics facilities and parks.
Responsibilities- Opening and closing of City facilities, parks, and athletic fields.
- Assist with graffiti abatement.
- Removes and disposes trash and debris from City facilities, parks, and public right-of-way.
- Performs custodial and general maintenance of Civic Center buildings, park buildings and restrooms, aquatics center, and other City facilities.
- Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and hand tools.
- Weeds, edges, mows, waters, prunes, fertilizes, and seeds lawns, shrubs, trees, and ground cover.
- Performs pick and shovel work; assists in concrete work.
- Assists in the set-up and take-down of equipment, portable stage, and bleachers for City programs and special events.
- Sets up baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and drags fields.
- Performs striping of fields and assists in fence layout.
- Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related work duties as assigned.
- Work as needed during holiday closures.
- Work as needed in support of City events which may fall on nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
Knowledge of: The use and maintenance of basic power and hand tools, equipment, materials and methods used in building and ground maintenance work. Operation of mower, trimmer, irrigation and carpentry equipment. Related work hazards and safety procedures.
Ability to: Learn the use and maintenance of basic power and hand tools, equipment, and materials used in building or ground maintenance work. Perform manual labor in a variety of weather conditions. Perform work requiring physical strength, dexterity and endurance. Meet the physical requirements stated in the City s Job Function Analysis for the position, including ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
Operate a motor vehicle safely. Read, write, and carry out oral and written instructions in English. Exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with staff and the public. Utilize quality customer service skills and techniques. Work varied shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Experience: Experience in landscape maintenance, building maintenance, construction trades, pool maintenance, automotive mechanics, warehouse operations, shipping and receiving, machine operation or related field is required.
Education: High School graduate or the equivalent is required.
Licenses Or CertificatesPossession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required.
Possession of a valid certified CPR, AED and First Aid certificate is required within the first three months of employment.
Supplemental InformationAppointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment requirements to include live scan fingerprinting and a medical examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.

The City of La Mirada offers a competitive compensation and benefits package based on the adopted Salary and Benefits Resolution. Appointments are normally made at the first step of a five step salary range. One year of City service is required to advance to the next pay step in the salary range.
