Job Summary
Next Level EMS is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Controls Design Engineer I to support the design and engineering of Building Automation and HVAC control systems. This position is ideal for an early-career engineer with foundational HVAC controls knowledge who is ready to develop technical depth within a structured and growing engineering team.
Job Duties & Responsibilities- Assist in designing HVAC control systems in accordance with contract documents and project scope.
- Support development of sequences of operation under guidance from Senior Engineers.
- Interpret mechanical plans, electrical diagrams, and specifications to support equipment selection.
- Prepare Bills of Material (BOM) for assigned projects.
- Develop control drawings including panel layouts, sensor locations, and wiring details using AutoCAD and/or Visio.
- Generate RFIs to clarify design issues as needed.
- Coordinate with project managers to ensure engineering deliverables are completed on time.
- Communicate internally with engineering and operations teams to ensure technical accuracy.
- Support field teams during installation and commissioning phases when necessary.
- Participate in training and apply Next Level EMS engineering standards.
- Other duties will be assigned as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent technical experience).
- Basic understanding of HVAC system operation and DDC concepts.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical plans.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Visio.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Experience supporting BAS installations or commissioning.
- Exposure to BACnet or other open-protocol integration environments.
- Basic programming exposure in HVAC controls platforms.
- Field experience in electrical or mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with submittal preparation and documentation workflows.
- Be able to sit for an extended period of time.
- Be able to lift and carry ladders, drawings, personal computers, material, etc.
- Be able to spend significant time standing and walking on construction sites.
- Be able to climb several flights of stairs or ladders throughout a typical day on a construction site.
