Crew Leader Opportunity
Position Title: Ameri Corps Crew Leader
Service Site: Wis Corps based in La Crosse, Wisconsin; project sites throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest
Service Dates- Summer Session:
April 21st – August 19th, 2026 (18 weeks – 1200-Hour Service Term) - Mid-Season Break:
August 20th – September 7th (2 weeks – unpaid) - Fall Session:
September 8th – November 14th, 2026 (10 weeks – 900-Hour Service Term)
- Biweekly living stipend of $550 per week for 28 weeks (totaling $15,400)
- Education Award of approximately $8,800 upon successful completion of service
- Housing provided as single-occupancy tents or dormitory-style indoor accommodations, depending on project requirements and time of year
Crew Leaders guide and motivate a conservation crew composed of 2-3 Crew Leaders and 3-4 Crew Members. They ensure safety, facilitate training in conservation techniques, manage logistics, and foster a tight-knit community while completing high-priority conservation and restoration projects.
Service DescriptionWis Corps crews work on projects such as habitat restoration, invasive species removal, trail building, and boardwalk construction in natural areas across Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. Crews live, serve, and travel together, adapting to diverse conditions and learning sustainable.

- Chainsaw Use and Maintenance Certification
- Brush Saw Use and Maintenance Training
- Certified Pesticide Applicator Certification in Wisconsin
- Leave No Trace (LNT) Training
- Trail Building Training
- Ameri Corps Orientation & Conflict Resolution Training
- Fleet Vehicle Use and Driving Training
- Trailer Towing Training and Practice
- Tent and Campsite Set Up Training
- Overview of Budgeting, Food Shopping, Cooking, and Hygiene
- Co-lead and motivate a conservation corps crew
- Oversee up to 15 hours of project work per day, with 40 hours of direct service and an additional 40 hours of indirect service per week
- Ensure the safety and well-being of Crew Members through training and support
- Operate and maintain equipment such as chainsaws, brush saws, and other tools necessary for conservation projects
- Communicate regularly with Wis Corps staff, project partners, and the public
- Manage daily crew tasks including meal planning, camp maintenance, budgeting, and logistical support
- Uphold and model Leave No Trace principles and sustainable living practices
- At least 21 years of age
- U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or legal permanent resident
- Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and perform field duties in adverse weather
- Prior leadership experience (e.g., as a conservation corps Crew Leader, summer camp counselor, mentor, or similar role)
- Commitment to the full 28-week field season and willingness to consent to a Criminal History Check
