Crew Members work on important conservation projects in the Upper Midwest, collaborating with agencies and nonprofits on habitat restoration, invasive species removal, and trail construction. This role offers valuable field experience, opportunities for community outreach, and a chance to contribute to meaningful conservation efforts.
Position DetailsTitle: Ameri Corps Crew Member
Service Site: Wis Corps, based in La Crosse, Wisconsin; project sites throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest
Service Dates- Summer Session: May 18th through August 15th, 2026 (13 weeks – 675 hours)
- Fall Session: September 8th through November 14th, 2026 (10 weeks – 675 hours)
- Biweekly living stipend paid throughout the season (Summer: $300/week for 13 weeks; Fall: $300/week for 10 weeks)
- Segal Ameri Corps Education Award (approximately $2,800 per session)
Housing is provided in the form of single occupancy tents at campsites or dormitory-style indoor accommodations, depending on the project and time of year.
Requirements- Must be at least 18 years of age
- A citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States
- Ability to pass a background and Criminal History Check
- Full availability throughout the season (10 or13 weeks)
- Ability to perform physically demanding field duties under varied weather conditions
Crew Members complete high-priority conservation and restoration projects across Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. Projects include habitat restoration, invasive species removal, trail construction, boardwalk installation, and other natural resource improvements. Crew Members live and work closely with their teammates, sharing responsibilities such as meal planning, cooking, camp setup, and maintenance. When not on active projects, they engage in community outreach and environmental education initiatives.
TrainingCrew Members participate in a three-day training program covering:
- Wilderness First Aid
- Leave No Trace (LNT) Training
- Brush Saw Use and Maintenance
- Trail Building Basics
- Ameri Corps Orientation and Conflict Resolution
- Tent and Campsite Setup
- Serve up to 10 hours per day on project assignments, averaging 40 hours per week
- Work as part of a crew (typically 4-7 service members) in outdoor settings
- Operate and maintain brush saws, hand tools, and long-handled trail-building equipment
- Hike extended distances with a 25+ pound backpack over varied terrain
- Communicate effectively with fellow crew members, project sponsors, and the public
- Practice sustainable living and Leave No Trace principles
- Adhere to all Wis Corps & Ameri Corps policies, including restrictions on alcohol, recreational drugs, and tobacco
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Commitment to the full service term (10 or 13 weeks)
- Willingness to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varied conditions
- Strong communication skills and a passion for environmental conservation
