The Safety Manager is a key plant leadership role partnering closely with operational teams to lead site-wide EHS programs and ensure compliance with company standards and all local, state, and federal regulations. This role oversees H & S activities, policies, training, and prevention efforts that protect people, processes, and the environment. Beyond compliance, the Safety Manager drives a zero-incident safety culture—collaborating directly with hourly teams and plant leaders to influence behavior, build ownership, and embed safety into daily operations.
Qualifications (Required & Preferred):
Education: High School or Equivalent (R); BS Physical Sciences (Occupational Safety, Public Health, Engineering, Environmental Science) or equivalent (P)
Experience: 5+ Years EHS management in an industrial setting (R);
Strong background in multiple facets of safety program implementation and management (R); EHS compliance (R);
Experience in a union environment (P)
Areas of Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local EH&S requirements including OSHA, NFPA, ANSI (R);
Industrial Hygiene (R), Workers Compensation (R), HAZCOM (R), Lockout/Tagout (R), PPE (R) and Ergonomics (R)
Skills: Implementation and maintenance of safety programs (R);
Communications (R), Computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint (R), Problem solving (R), Licensed Asbestos Inspector (P), Strategic Planning (P), Six Sigma (P)
Role Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary on-site safety lead while partnering with plant management and EHS staff to implement, manage, and continuously improve safety programs and initiatives in alignment with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with site and area leadership to drive accountability at all levels of the organization such that EHS policies are understood and implemented consistently across the site.
- Promote employee engagement by encouraging participation in safety observations, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Drive implementation of EHS best practices across the site looking for opportunities to streamline, standardize, simplify in ways that create positive employee engagement toward achieving safety excellence.
- Track and analyze leading and lagging safety performance indicators, develop action plans and communicate results to leadership.
- Lead and/or support incident investigations, including root cause analysis, documentation, and follow-up on corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain and manage EHS documentation, inspection records, training logs, incident reports, and safety meeting notes.
- Effectively communicate and manage compliance with: company policies and procedures; training requirements; accident reporting procedures;
Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) directives;
Lockout/Tagout/Try procedures;
Confined space entry procedures; the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Ensure conformance with ISO 45001 requirements. - Monitor, interpret, and communicate regulatory requirements (OSHA, IOSHA, NFPA, ANSI etc.) to ensure compliance and proactive risk management; conduct semiannual audits to ensure compliance.
- Lead Haynes Safety department during any IOSHA/OSHA inspections on site.
- Coordinate industrial hygiene air sampling with provider & communicate results to employees.
- Create and implement effective H&S training programs and track completion.
- Coordinate activities of the Union safety committee to ensure their continued involvement.
- Manage ISO 45001 system and maintain certification; correspond with internal auditors & supervisors to ensure deficiencies are identified and abated.
- Champion and manage Haynes Internationals Safety Management Information System.
- Manage the investigation process on all incidents while identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
- Manage claims for injuries and illnesses in the Safety Management Information System, posted on the OSHA log, along with annual federal OSHA required reporting.
- Support the plant medical department with Workers Compensation needs.
- Provides technical safety support to all projects and their managers.
- Serve as Safety Liaison with outside organizations (Local Emergency Planning Commission, Local Fire Department/EMS).
- Serve as Emergency Response Coordinator, managing emergency procedures and organizing emergency teams.
